Ranbir Kapoor’s 2023 blockbuster Animal met with extreme backlash and became an all-time grosser. So, while his director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, justified the themes, Ranbir went only so far. One particularly interesting aspect of the film was that it ends on a teaser of a sequel: Animal Park. That promised a lot and may have led the audience into imagining a whole other universe at work.
Now, fans and critics alike are abuzz as Ranbir confirmed that Animal will be a trilogy after all. He described the first film as a mere “flirtation” with the core vision for the series and has given only a glimpse of what’s to come. From the actor’s point of view, he is excited by the franchise as it provides him with an opportunity to portray the protagonist as well as the antagonist, thus offering a unique challenge. However, the trilogy’s continuation is expected to be released in 2027. Hence, fans will need to wait a few years before the next one is released.

The announcement has mixed reactions. Viewers have already expressed their exhaustion with the trilogy and film series trend, preferring lighter, stand-alone movies. Others have condemned the storytelling in the first movie and are holding out for better in the sequel. The move is also drawing comparisons to the success of the Pushpa franchise that is still doing well, as rumors spread that Pushpa 3 is already underway.
While it is still unclear whether this trilogy was ever part of a plan or only because of how Animal went at the box office, Ranbir actually seems to genuinely be excited with the direction he’s going for. He even described Vanga as an “extremely original director,” despite all the flak he and the film went through. Of course, whether audiences will find their cinematic journey on Animal satisfying remains in the future; but one thing is certain-it’s a ride Kapoor is quite committed to.
