Saif Ali Khan has often been known for speaking openly about the realities of the film industry, and in a recent conversation he shared candid thoughts about nepotism, privilege and the challenges his son Ibrahim Ali Khan faces as he begins his journey in Bollywood. During a podcast discussion with his sister Soha Ali Khan, Saif reflected on the complicated debate surrounding star kids in the Hindi film industry and explained why he believes Ibrahim must ultimately prove himself without relying too heavily on the advantages that come with his family background.
Ibrahim recently entered the film industry with the romantic drama Nadaaniyan, produced by Karan Johar. The film marked his debut as an actor and generated considerable attention because of his family legacy. However, the project received mixed responses from both audiences and critics. While some viewers were curious to see Ibrahim’s on-screen presence, the film itself and his performance were met with criticism in several quarters. His second project, Sarzameen, also struggled to make a strong impression. The reactions to these early films have placed Ibrahim at the centre of conversations about the opportunities given to newcomers with influential backgrounds.
During the discussion, Saif acknowledged that the nepotism debate exists for a reason and admitted that coming from a well-known film family does create a different starting point for aspiring actors. Saif himself is the son of veteran actor Sharmila Tagore and the late cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and he said he is aware that his entry into the industry came with advantages that many others do not have. According to him, this difference often shapes how audiences perceive success stories in cinema.
Saif noted that viewers tend to admire actors who achieve success without powerful industry connections because their journeys appear more difficult and relatable. At the same time, he pointed out that audiences can become frustrated when actors from film families continue to receive multiple opportunities despite not delivering convincing performances. Reflecting on this, Saif said that when someone eventually proves their talent, audiences feel justified in supporting them. However, repeated chances without improvement can raise questions about fairness in the industry.
Explaining his perspective further, Saif commented that situations where someone receives several opportunities despite underperforming can feel unfair to others who may be equally talented but lack the same access. His remarks highlighted the tension that often exists between privilege and merit in the entertainment industry, a topic that continues to spark discussion among fans and critics alike.
Saif also spoke about his role as a father and the balance he tries to maintain between supporting his children and encouraging independence. He said he will always stand by his children, including Ibrahim, but he believes there are limits to how much assistance he should provide. According to Saif, Ibrahim has already received certain advantages because of his family name, which means he must now prove himself through his own work. The actor suggested that stepping back at times may actually help his son develop confidence and resilience in his career.
While discussing Ibrahim’s journey, Saif emphasized that facing criticism and navigating challenges are important parts of building a career in cinema. The actor indicated that he prefers his son to learn from experiences within the industry rather than relying on constant parental intervention.
Alongside these personal reflections, Saif also spoke briefly about his own upcoming projects. He will next appear in the investigative drama Kartavya, directed by Pulkit and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment. The film also features Rasika Duggal and Saurabh Dwivedi and is expected to premiere on Netflix later this year. In addition, Saif is preparing for Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan. The project will reunite him with Akshay Kumar after nearly 17 years, making it one of the more anticipated collaborations among fans of both actors.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Ali Khan is preparing for his next film, Diler, which will be directed by Kunal Deshmukh. According to reports, actor Sreeleela is expected to star opposite him, although the casting has not yet been officially confirmed by the makers. The film is expected to be Ibrahim’s first theatrical release following his earlier projects that premiered on streaming platforms.
