The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother has taken another heartbreaking turn. According to a new report, one of the ransom notes allegedly sent in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie contained an apology for her death and suggested that money could be exchanged for the return of her body. The disturbing message reportedly surfaced just days after the 84-year-old vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home in February, adding another chilling layer to a case that has gripped the public for months. Sources close to the investigation told Air Mail that the note arrived on February 6 and appeared noticeably different from an earlier ransom demand.
While the first message claimed Nancy was “safe but scared” and demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin for her return, the later communication reportedly carried a more hesitant and emotional tone. The alleged kidnapper initially demanded $4 million, threatening consequences if the money was not paid by a specific deadline. The amount later increased to $6 million. Investigators reportedly attempted to trace the sender by transferring a small amount of cryptocurrency to the provided Bitcoin wallet, hoping the individual would move the funds and expose their identity. However, the money was never touched.
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1, and security footage released by authorities allegedly showed a masked suspect near her property around the time she disappeared. Despite months of investigation, no arrests have been made and her whereabouts remain unknown.
Throughout the ordeal, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have repeatedly used social media to appeal directly to whoever may be responsible. In emotional videos, the Today show anchor publicly offered money in exchange for information and pleaded for her mother’s safe return.
Back in March, Savannah acknowledged that the ransom notes may have been genuine and urged the sender to bring her mother home. In another emotional message released later that month, she admitted the family was preparing for the possibility that Nancy may no longer be alive but said they desperately needed answers.
The case remains active as investigators continue searching for clues nearly five months after Nancy’s disappearance. Meanwhile, Savannah has returned to work while continuing to publicly advocate for information that could finally reveal what happened to her mother.
As the investigation enters a new phase, the latest report has only deepened the mystery surrounding one of the most talked-about missing person cases involving a major television personality’s family.
