Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone were earlier one of the best-loved couples in Bollywood. The two had started dating in their early career years, with the relationship being full of public outings, on-screen chemistry, and visions of a long-lasting romance. But the fairy tale was brought to a rude shock when Deepika found Ranbir cheating on her. Through the years, both actors have spoken about their breakup, and old interviews are now providing new insights into what actually went wrong.
Neetu Kapoor: “He Was Not Himself”
In an old clip, Ranbir’s mother Neetu Kapoor spoke about her son’s relationship with Deepika. “I don’t think he’s had too many girlfriends; he’s had just one girlfriend, that’s Deepika,” she expressed. Neetu went on to say, “Perhaps there was something lacking in their relationship. Perhaps he was not himself, and he had to break up. If it was perfect, they wouldn’t have split up.”
Neetu’s words seem to provide a sympathetic reason for the breakup, yet Deepika’s earlier disclosures reveal something else a tale of betrayal and emotional distress.
Deepika Padukone: “He Made a Habit of Cheating”
In a vintage interview as quoted by Cosmopolitan India, Deepika openly talked about the heartbreak she had experienced. “I was stupid enough to give him a second chance because he pleaded and begged,” she revealed. “Then I actually caught him red-handed.”

Deepika disclosed that the biggest break-up issue was infidelity. “Once it enters, respect dies, trust dies and these are the foundation stones of a relationship. You can’t f*ck around with it,” she declared, saying that the break-up made her emotionally stronger. “I cried abundantly after my break-up. But I have improved as a human being, and I owe it to him.”
Ranbir Kapoor: “Yes, I Have Cheated”
In a 2011 interview with Stardust, Ranbir Kapoor finally came clean about the true reason for their breakup. “Yes, I have cheated, out of immaturity, out of inexperience, out of taking advantage of certain temptations,” he said, admitting that he had learned from his mistakes.

Though they had a turbulent history, the two have both gone on to lead peaceful lives. Deepika Padukone is now married to Ranveer Singh, while Ranbir Kapoor married Alia Bhatt. Interestingly enough, all four are on good terms with each other today—and are now parents to baby girls.
