The Story of DREAM GIRL
Karamvir aka Karm (Ayushmann Khurrana) has this unique ability to mimic a nubile woman’s voice since childhood. The grown up unemployed Karm finds his rare quirky talent as a tool to save his unemployment woes and loan dues of his father Jagjeet (Annu Kapoor) who runs a shop that sells funeral items in Mathura – the land of Radha Krishna. Karm gets hired by WJi (Rajesh Sharma) who runs an underground Friendship club where women talk to men in a seductive tone. Karm takes the role of Pooja at his work place and being good in his art, finds himself lured by men from all ages and stages ranging from a cop Rajpal (Vijay Raaz) who has a passion for poetry.
A hot headed rich Haryanvi Gujjar boy Toto (Raj Bhansali) , even the brother of his fiancé Mahi (Nushrat Bharucha) – Mahendar (Abhishek Banerjee) is crazy for Pooja and that’s not all, to add more insanity to the fun, a man-hating journalist Roma (Nidhi Bisht) and a surprise late entry makes the life of Karm torn between fact and fiction – Pooja and Karm where Pooja constantly threatens to take over his system throwing his life into a topsy-turvy of errors with only one constant companion Smiley (Manjot Singh) his childhood friend to give hope.

The novelty of the premise, the situations, the crackling humour and Ayushmann Khurrana in his endearingly best as Pooja are the strongest points of DREAM GIRL. The dialogues and writing by Nirmaan D Singh and Raaj Shaandilyaa is spot on and hits the right notes. Raaj Shaandilyaa’s previous experience with cross dressing males providing the laughter quotient in Kapil Sharma’s shows comes handy.
Nirmaan D Singh’s grasp over the milieu and ability to fetch sly humour in day to day routine works wonders. Next is the bromance between Manjot Singh and Ayushmann Khurrana – completely crowd pleasing.
Raaj Shaandilyaa’s narration is smooth and flows in a steady pace. The reference of classic Bollywood songs and movies like ‘gulabi aankhein’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hai Kaun’ is smartly used.
Ayushmann Khurrana anchors his role like a master of expressions. Switching from Karam to Pooja in a snap, it feels like Ayushmann Khurrana has made his character Pooja his prop for this particular show which is sweet, lovely and arresting to the core. Ayushmann seems to be having a blast as Pooja and ditto for the audience.
Annu Kapoor is a blast right from the word go, tremendously entertaining. Vijay Raaz is sheer pleasure as always but this time the extra quirk with those pointless shayari’s make a point and lands perfectly. Raj Bhansali makes his presence felt. Manjot Singh is endearingly funny. Abhishek Banerjee has its moments. Nidhi Bisht is tailor made for the given role.
Other supporting actors chip in with valuable support where Neha Saraf as Vijay Raaz’s wife gets some scope to deliver some laughs. Rajesh Sharma is competent as always. Neela Mulherkar – the granny is hilarious. And finally, Nushrat Bharucha gives her best in whatever screen time she gets.
Abhishek Arora’s background score, Aseem Mishra’s cinematography is appealing. Rajat Poddar’s production design is colorful. Hemal Kothari’s editing is fine. Music by Meet Bro adds to the momentum, ‘Dil Ka Telephone’ keeps ringing for a while even when it gets over.
Flaws
DREAM GIRL is a comedy that entertains but fails to enlighten fully. The ‘lonely’ theme ironically finds itself alone in the end. The climax is a letdown and poor tribute to Priyadarshan, Anees Bazmee style of comedy. Ayushmann Khurrana and Nushrat Bharucha’s romance is pale. The sexist satire on MAHABHARATA may raise some eye brows.

DREAM GIRL is laughter guaranteed where Ayushmann Khurrana is the heart and Pooja is the body. Ayushmann Khurrana ensures that the audience falls in love with Pooja instantly. Fix your date with Pooja this evening, she won,t disappoint and yes you can bring your beloved as well, she won’t mind.
