Age is just a number when it comes to love, finding romance is easy, staying together is hard, giving space much harder, and writing a warm, modern and funny love story about true lovers trying to remain partners is even more difficult. Luv Ranjan achieves this rare feat and shows growth as a writer.
The story of DE DE PYAAR DE
Ashish (Ajay Devgn) a fifty year old rich single meets a carefree 25 year old hot Ayesha (Rakul Preet) and its flirt at first sight which later turns into pious love. However Ashish’s psychiatrist friend (Jaaved Jaaferi) believes its lust and nothing else, Ashish is looking for some fun with a girl half his age and the girl is seeking a better affluent life style by staying with Ashish. However, Ashish and Ayesha realize that they are not just habits which can be changed. Ashish takes Ayesha to India to introduce her to his family which he has left, wife Manju (Tabu), daughter Ishika (Inayat Sood) and father (Alok Nath). The timing gets wrong as Ashish’s daughter who hates is father is about to introduce her love of life to her family. Things take a chaotic turn and in the due course the true meaning of love, the cliché associated with marriage, the loyalty of a ‘live in’ relationship, the ‘age’ factor in relationships, the hue and cry over divorce etc is discussed in a light hearted manner.
Stand out moment
A scene between Tabu and Ajay Devgn, Tabu does all the talking and Ajay consoles her. It’s a gem that brings out the aghast a women of good virtue has to go through in her life. Brilliantly written and outstandingly performed.
Writing
Luv Ranjan as a writer in a crowd pleasing urbane mainstream fiction hits the right notes and things start feeling real when the movie brings its observation on marriage, divorce, separation, the age factor, the ‘live in’, love and acceptance. The writer director known for entertainers like PYAAR KA PUNCHNAMA, SONU KE TITU KI SWEETY, PYAAR KA PUNCHNAMA 2, the so called worshipper of ‘boyhood’ in his cinema this time lets the women do the talking and take decisions. The screenplay by Luv Ranjan, Tarun Jain and Surabhi Bhatnagar’s has some moments of gem involving Ajay Devgn and Tabu that makes you root for estranged love and also raises causes for the after effects of separation amongst children. The best part is it never takes sides and puts its point forward. The dialogues are major plus for example the ‘dobaara’ one and the best part of DE DE PYAAR DE is that it successfully says that friendship in relationship is a must.
Performances
Ajay Devgn
Ajay Devgn is suave and perfect as the debonair who can give young men half his age a run for their money. Keeps his penchant for comedy intact and excels in emotional moments as well. His eyes do most of the talking and yes that Singham moment. Superb, simply superb!.
Rakul Preet Singh
Rakul Preet Singh is a revelation and this is her best in bollywood act till date. Hot, happening and endearing. The actress is able to stand at par with the brilliance of Tabu and Ajay Devgn is a feat that rarely gets achieved. Outstanding!
Tabu
What to say about this amazing actress. She is a stealer and comes strong in role that seems to be written only for her. Her scenes with Ajay Devgn are well written and smartly performed. Tabu holds her part so amazingly and is such a natural performer that you don’t feel that she is acting. Amazing Brilliance!
Performances of other actors
Inayat irritates initially but later settles down. Kumud Mishra adds value. Bhavin Bhanushali is endearing. Jaaved Jaaferi has his moments. Sunny Singh is entertaining. Alok Nath repeats himself.
Direction of Akiv Ali
Editor turned director Akiv Ali’s debut as a story teller is convincing and he has a flow and understanding of the script. Things may have gone overboard and turned this into a mad caper with moments of seriousness but here Akiv Ali is able to make a proper balance in giving a mature, coming of age love story.
Music
Music by Amaal Mallik, Rochak Kohli, Tanishk Bagchi, Vipin Patwa and Manj Musik is just passable nothing to take home.
Technicalities
Production values are top notch. Sudhir K. Chaudhary’s camerawork is eye pleasing and the editing is fine. Hitesh Sonik’s background score is apt.
Flaws
Not for the traditional followers of love, it’s dominated by an urban feel, it’s not a mad caper and/or a rom com, those who have reservations on ‘live in’ and consider divorce as a huge failure may not agree. Those who believe ‘age’ is a factor in love won’t feel the warmth. At places liberties are taken at will and things happen because it has to happen to make things movie forward. The talent of Jimmy Shergill is wasted.
Final words
DE DE PYAAR DE in the first impression seems to be taking the traditional rom com route with ‘age’ as a twist but after a while it politely argues. Its better in its argument, that is funny, straight, weightier. It talks about understanding of love with a degree of maturity, wit, humor with a nod for acceptance and backed by top notch performance.
