The Story of FAMILY OF THAKURGANJ
Nannu (Jimmy Shergill) born in a seedha saada family takes law in his hands due to circumstances and becomes the right hand of the powerful gangster Baba Bhandari (Saurabh Shukla). Another loyal of Baba Bhandari – Badri Pathak (Mukesh Tiwari) is jealous of Nannu’s rise. Nannu’s gorgeous wife Sharbati (Mahie Gill) and loving mother (Supriya Pilgaonkar) are proud of their son. While younger brother Munnu (Nandish Singh) is a man of good virtues who follows and respects law. How things and equations between these people change forms the crux of the film.
Analysis
FAMILY OF THAKURGANJ begins as a drama and later becomes a serious joke on itself that never ends. A mockery of the genre that goes nowhere. An amorphous mess that lacks focus and edge it turns surreal with characters like Ballu Thapa. What was Manoj K. Jha smoking while making this unexplained torture?. The presence of amazing talents like Jimmy Shergill, Mahie Gill, Saurabh Shukla, Pavan Malhotra ( as a police officer) save this from becoming an ultimate caricature. Nandish Singh the modern age Sashi Kapoor from DEEWAR with a twist fails to get the right expressions. Further director Manoj K Jha who has assisted Tigmanshu Dhulia seems to have got carried away in whatever he has learnt and tried to bring in everything in one and failed miserably. It’s like exploring a thought then deciding against it. For example initially Mahie Gill’s character is designed on the lines of her character in SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER minus the oomph. She gets even with petty local goondas as well. Even promises a vendetta against her husband’s enemies and later she vanishes from the scene. FAMILY OF THAKURGANJ appears to be a movie where the maker had no solid clue on his own and relied on suggestions received from every hook and corner.
Final words
FAMILY OF THAKURGANJ is a mobster drama mobbed by a cavalcade of unexplained characters trying to steal some place and tell a story. But by the time they find some space, they are out from the story. If it’s a mockery, spoof on gangster dramas then alas the joke is not on the genre it’s on you.
