MISSION MANGAL movie review is here. Released today, the movie stars an ensemble cast of Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari, Sharman Joshi, H. G. Dattatreya and Sonakshi Sinha. Directed by Jagan Shakti, the movie is based on the story of scientists at Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Mangalyaan mission. The Story of MISSION MANGAL
A tribute to the team of ISRO that wrote history on space and made India proud with mission Mangalyaan. Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) is the mission director while Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan) is the project director. Their core team includes Sonakshi Sinha as Eka Gandhi, Taapsee Pannu as Kritika Aggarwal, Nithya Menen as Varsha Pillai, Kirti Kulhari as Neha Siddiqui and Sharman Joshi as Parmeshwar Naidu. How sheer determination and the will to fulfill their dreams made them achieve this impossible feat fighting family issues at home and lack of support and funds in the department finds the crux of this movie.

A pleasant and thoroughly absorbing example on how to seamlessly blend common sense we use daily with the knowledge of science and infuse patriotism and love for your women at home or workplace in the hearts without making any extra effort. The rare quality to say big things in small words is the key to MISSION MANGAL’s fascinating journey. The script by R. Balki, Jagan Shakti, Nidhi Singh Dharma and Saketh Kondiparthi is written in keeping the layman (the target audience) in mind. The director Jagan Shakti in his debut as a full fledge director is assured, filled with moments from life, flows like a fairy tale, it’s simple, natural and heartwarming. No effort to be an expert is made, the movie manipulates on human emotions and elements commonly used by every Indian – God, cinema, maa and cricket. It works and works beautifully.
The women power Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari and Sonakshi Sinha hold the key to this on screen happiness and Jagan Shakti gives everyone a back story to make them believable. Divulging more will make me label as a spoiler but one thing is sure, as an audience either you will identify with the character or the situation they are in and that magical connection with almost all the characters with the audience brings magic to the movie. Performance wise MISSION MANGAL is a treat a sight to behold on screen. Akshay Kumar is infectious right from the first frame till the very end. He brings that rare remarkable ease and poise to his role and gets funny at a snap. He loves Bollywood retro music and hums classics at every situation – this is Akshay at his pleasant best. The super star is cool in letting the super women take the lead while he attains his unique individuality without overpowering any of his colleagues. Simply Amazing.
If Akshay Kumar is heart, Vidya Balan is the beat. The amazing actress plays Tara like she was born for that purpose only. Her moments with her son, daughter, colleagues, husband make her an ideal bhartiya naari. Vidya Balan as Tara is a ‘puri’ ki ‘puri’ adakara with élan in this movie.
Sonakshi Sinha is exceptional. Taapsee Pannu is brilliant. Nithya Menen makes an impression with a pleasant debut. Kirti Kulhari has her moments. Sharman Joshi is endearing. H G Dattatreya the veteran scientist is cute. Dalip Tahil is fantastic. Sanjay Kapoor is marvelous. Purab Kohli and Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub chip in with valuable support. Other valuable contribution comes from the veteran Vikram Gokhale.
Amit Trivedi comes with a winner in ‘Shaabaashiyaan’.
Beautifully shot by S Ravi Varman and Sandeep Ravade’s production design is authentic. Debashish Mishra’s sound design is an asset. VFX by Famulus Media and Entertainment is another hero of the movie. Chandan Arora’s editing is good.
Flaws
The movie’s superficial and fairy tale approach will be questioned. A song pops up unnecessarily and yes at places things happen as per convenience.
Final words
Some movies make us believe in ourselves, some make us forget what we are while some take the leap to go to majestic extremes, MISSION MANGAL tries to do all these and achieves success. The climax will make you stand and salute these great Indians who made NASA eat its teeth in disbelieve and making India and Indians proud in universe. Akshay Kumar infectiously spearheads this rousingly magical salute to the mother, daughters and sisters of India on Independence Day. MISSION MANGAL is a must for every man, every woman, every Indian and every human.
