The Story of SAAND KI AANKH
The incredible real life motivational saga and a rewarding statement on women empowerment showcased by the 87 year old Shooter Dadi (Chandro Tomar) – Bhumi Pednekar and 82 year old Revolver Dadi (Prakashi Tomar) – Taapsee Pannu gets adapted for screen by Balwinder Singh Janjua. Newly married Prakashi Tomar enters the household of the Tomar’s in Johri a village in Bagpat district in Uttar Pradesh, India. Prakashi develops an instant bond with her sister – in –law Chandro (Bhumi Pedenekar). The household is ruled by the age old patriarchy played by Prakash Jha – the head of the family and village sarpanch as well. Chandro and Tapsee wear ghoonghats up to their neck and are identified by their colour of duppatta. Doing all households that include making hokkah for their husbands to making them wear their chappals, a revolution takes place when Dr. Yashpal (Vineet Kumar Singh) leaves his practice and decides to open up a shooting range in Johri village. Dr, Yashpal convinces the sarpanch to let Chandro’s granddaughter Shefali (Sara Arjun) join the shooting range.

A chance encounter sees Chandro hitting the bull’s eye on the very first go and thus begins an inspirational journey that transcends generations and gender bias spearheaded by the legendary shooter dadi and revolver dadi  â€“ Chandro with Prakashi later followed by Shefali Seema (Pritha Bakshi) – Prakashi’s daughter.

SAAND KI AANKH movie review
A symbolic statement of women empowerment right from the word go – the title itself makes a comment and the screenplay by Balwinder Singh Janjua is remarkably balanced with enlightening and entertaining moments. The movie makes a rare decisive sweep and the message stands tall throughout.

This fearless women with the desi katta (pistol) are pure, pious and a living example Balwinder Singh Janjua’s screenplay is bang on it not only shoots the toxic male machismo, the gender bias, and make a solidly profound statement on women empowerment in one go, it attacks the patriarchy and offer timeless inspiration to all women with symbolisms by highlighting the ordeals faced by women in our society since ages?!!.

Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu are crackling and all the ‘age’ related doubts gets cleared without taking much time. The chemistry between Bhumi and Tapsee is outstanding – not often seen in Bollywood mainstream cinema. Tapsee and Bhumi are unbreakable, the new female Jai Veeru or say the desi THELMA & LOUISE. SAAND KI AANKH is blessed with the high high-octane acts of Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu. Both get equal scope, moments and dialogues from writer Jagdeep Singh Sidhu who never fails to give the audience an eye full experience of emotions and inspirations.

Debutant director Tushar Hiranandani the writer of hits like DISHOOM, ABCD series, MASTI series, EK VILLAIN, HOUSEFULL 2, DOUBLE DHAMAL etc displays a marvelous understanding of the subject matter and treats the movie as a crowd pleasing family entertainer that makes a rewarding sweep with its message. It’s a tough task and Tushar Hiranandani excels in infusing the right sentiments at the right time. The milieu is maintained and the feel is as authentic as a mainstream cinema can get.

Production design by Ravi Srivastava and art direction by Vilas Kolap requires special mention. Music by Vishal Mishra blends well with the movie and theme, “Udta Teetar”, “Womaniya” and Asha Bhosle’s “Aasmaa” are the pick of the lot.

From the supporting cast Vineet Kumar Singh excels, Sara Arjun as Shefali and  Pritha Bakshi as Seema are very natural. Prakash Jha makes a terrific impact.

Flaws
The makeup and prosthetic department fail to do justice allowing naysayers to have a base. Extra liberties are taken.

Final words
SAAND KI AANKH is an achievement at various levels. A cinema that entertains and enlightens as well. The towering message of women empowerment that helps the movie to rise above its flaws. A mainstream cinema that is pure desi and is capable of making statements and asking questions on the prevalent sexist orthodoxy since ages that demonstrates the poignancy of women and their lives trapped in such system and what determination can do and lead an example.

The story of shooter dadi Chandro and revolver dadi Prakashi Tomar is a story that needs to be told and SAAND KI AANKH is a cinema that holds and beholds this fact.
