It’s all feel good in Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma starrer helmed by the DUM LAGA KE HAISHA fame Sharat Katariya.
Another hinterland based fairy tale with humour & warmth driven from real day to day life laced with emotional trappings and seamless performance, SUI DHAAGA the story of Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and Mamta (Anushka Sharma) has the ‘shamta’ ( capacity) to entertain and enthrall.
Mauji is the common young Indian, staying below the poverty line married to Mamta (Anushka Sharma), Mauji’s father played by Raghubir Yadav has given up the tradition of traditional handloom, has worked for years and now retired. While beta ji – Mauji wants to do something on his own. Mauji decides to revive the family tradition and starts his own tailoring business. But life is tough, Mauji’s mother (Yamini Das) gets hospitalized, envious relatives and no support except from Mamta throws challenges to Mauji and Mamta but the determined husband and wife duo fight all odds and stitch their dream into a reality.
Sharat Katriya almost uses the same tools used in DUM LAGA KE HAISHA, a middle class family in the Hindi heartland, a newlywed couple, a dream and a competition. There is warmth in the settings Chanderi this time, SUI DHAAGA has everything a feel good family movie should have, it’s an inspiring tale as well with moments but lacks the fresh breeze of air and individuality which DUM LAGA KE HAISHA had – the common love for Kumar Sanu for example.
Its relishing to find the movie lead pair Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, coming out from their comfort zones and achieving the excellence. But there was no need to make Mamta cry at every point. On the other hand Mauji’s expertise in tailoring is not established.
Coming with the tagline MADE IN INDIA, SUI DHAAGA has some fantastic performances coming from other actors apart from the lead, Yamini Das as mother is marvelous. Namit Das as Guddu is outstanding. Raghubir Yadav is excellent.
Technically polished with solid production values, Anil Mehta’s cinematography is a major plus. Meenal Agarwal’s production design is authentic. Costume designers Darshan Jalan and Neelanchal Kumar Ghosh deserve a pat on their back. Charu Shree Roy’s editing is fine. Music goes with the flow, veteran Anu Malik is in his element in the song ‘Chaav Laaga’. Andrea Guerra’s background score adds momentum.
Ironically, Sharat Katariya’s DUM LAGA KE HAISHA was the cinema that our fathers, grandfathers complained that it doesn’t get made anymore; SUI DHAAGA is the one which can be watched with them for sure at least.
