Moana Live Action Review: Disney’s Beautiful Remake Loses the Magic of the Original

Disney’s Moana Live Action is visually polished and features strong performances, but does it justify remaking one of its best modern classics? Here’s our 1.5/5 review.

Disney’s Moana Live Action faithfully retells the story of the 2016 animated classic. After darkness begins consuming the island of Motunui, Moana (Catherine Laga’aia) sets sail to return to the heart of Te Fiti with the reluctant help of the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). The story, songs and major emotional beats remain almost identical to the original.

The problem is that the film never answers one simple question: Why does this remake exist?

The animated Moana was already one of Disney’s strongest modern classics. It was vibrant, emotionally rich and visually imaginative. This remake recreates nearly every memorable scene but rarely improves upon them. Instead, it feels like a technically polished copy that struggles to capture the same sense of wonder.

One of the biggest changes is surprisingly subtle. In the animated film, Moana looked physically small and timid beside the towering Maui. That contrast made her courage feel extraordinary, and watching her slowly earn the respect of a thousand-year-old demigod became one of the story’s most rewarding arcs. Here, that dynamic doesn’t feel nearly as convincing. Moana appears far more confident from the beginning, making her ability to persuade and transform Maui feel less organic. The emotional evolution between the two characters simply doesn’t carry the same weight.

Performance-wise, Catherine Laga’aia is sincere and brings warmth to Moana, while Dwayne Johnson comfortably slips back into Maui. Rena Owen, however, steals the film as Grandma Tala, delivering the movie’s most emotional and believable performance. Ironically, the scenes that truly come alive are the heavily CGI-driven ones. Heihei remains hilarious, Tamatoa is visually spectacular, and the living ocean still creates the film’s most magical moments. It almost feels as though the animation is reminding us why the original medium worked so well.

The soundtrack continues to be one of the film’s greatest strengths, with beloved songs retaining their emotional impact. However, the newly added musical number feels more like an obligatory addition than a meaningful expansion of the story. Likewise, the extended runtime doesn’t translate into deeper character development or a richer narrative. It simply makes a familiar story feel longer.

Visually, the film is polished but lacks the bold colours and expressive energy that made the animated world unforgettable. Several comedic moments also lose their charm in live action, proving that not every animated scene benefits from being recreated with real actors and CGI.

More than anything, Moana Live Action highlights Disney’s growing obsession with revisiting proven successes instead of investing in fresh ideas. The studio has countless talented writers capable of creating new worlds and unforgettable characters, yet it continues revisiting stories that have already reached their full potential. Rather than spending hundreds of millions recreating a film that audiences still adore, that creative energy could have gone into something original.

Moana Live Action isn’t a terrible film. In fact, it’s perfectly watchable. But being “watchable” isn’t enough when you’re remaking a masterpiece. The original delivered a richer emotional experience, more imaginative visuals and stronger storytelling nearly a decade ago. This version asks audiences
to pay for the same journey again while offering very little in return. If you want the true magic of Moana, the animated classic remains the definitive experience.
