ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI movie review

What was supposed to be a night of celebration turns into a talkative and highly effective, instigating debate on racism, discrimination, rights of the blacks, individual responsibility, the use and misuse of power, religion, part and parcel of being a celebrity and humanity.

“Yeah you don’t need religion for that kid you can just join a gang”, Says Aldis Hodge who plays the legendary footballer and actor Jim Brown in the movie to a young security guy who is excited to join Nation of Islam to teach the white-bullies a lesson.

When Leslie Odom Jr. who plays Sam Cooke aka King of Soul asks Jim Brown if he will convert to Islam too after coming to know about the iconic boxer Cassius Clay who is on the verge of converting into a Muslim –Muhammad Ali.

Brown shoots back by saying, “S—t! Have you tasted my grandma’s pork chops?!”

Oscar and Golden Globe award winner actor and director in her feature film debut shows tremendous command over the medium and offers a new hope in modern age cinema that explores the quantum of hope amidst chaos.

Based on a play by Kemp Powers, ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI is a fictionalized account of a real incident that happened on the night of February 25th in 1964. Boxer Cassius Clay (played by Eli Goree), football legend Jim Brown (played by Aldis Hodge), activist Malcom X (played by Kingsley Ben-Adir) and soul singer Sam Cooke (played by Leslie Odom Jr.) meet at the Hampton House Motel in Liberty City. The movie imagines that these four black icons, who were friends in real life, met at a Miami motel in February 1964 after Clay’s famous win over Sonny Liston making way for his heavyweight champion-of-the-world title.

Ruling on emotions, powerful dialogues and knock out performances from Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Muhammad Ali, Aldis Hodge, Leslie Odom Jr.

ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI is a cinema that can resonate with today’s times; it’s timeless in its theme and fearless in its attitude.
