The Conjuring: Last Rites Review Big Box Office, Small Scares

The Conjuring: Last Rites opened with a record-breaking $83M, but despite its box office power, the horror finale doesn’t deliver enough scares. Read our full review.

A Record-Breaking Debut:
The Conjuring: Last Rites stormed the domestic box office with a massive $83 million opening weekend, making it the biggest horror premiere of 2025 so far. Globally, the film reached $187 million, finally knocking Weapons off the top spot after four weeks.

As the grand finale of James Wan’s horror universe, the film reunites Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. It’s marketed as a haunting send-off, and financially, it’s already a high point for the franchise, surpassing The Nun’s 2018 debut by more than 50%.

What Works:
Epic Scale: The film feels like a true conclusion, weaving callbacks to earlier chapters.
Strong Leads: Wilson and Farmiga bring depth and gravitas to the Warrens one last time.
Visuals & Sound: Big set pieces and sharp production values add polish.

What Doesn’t:
Despite its size and spectacle, Last Rites doesn’t live up to its promise of terror. For a franchise known for keeping audiences awake at night, this entry feels more like a supernatural thriller than a horror film.

The atmosphere is eerie, yes, but the scares rarely land. By the end, the sense of closure outweighs the fear factor, leaving fans wanting more chills in what should’ve been the scariest chapter.

Final Word:
The Conjuring: Last Rites is a commercial triumph and a fitting farewell to the Warrens. But while it ties up the saga with grandeur, it fails to scare at the level fans expect.

Rating: 3/5 entertaining yes, but not terrifying.
