Actor and host Drew Barrymore and singer Zayn Malik recently shared a personal moment on The Drew Barrymore Show, where they got tattoos inspired by each other. The segment was pre recorded and aired on Thursday. During the conversation before getting the tattoos, Barrymore explained the meaning behind her choice.
She said, “I started studying what your name means and one of the words that it means is ‘grace,’” and added that it is something she has wanted for a long time. She explained, “It’s one of the tattoos I’ve always wanted because it’s the thing I’ve got to start giving myself in a different way.”
She also connected this idea to mental health and self care. She said, “Putting your name on my body in the form of grace, I think, is going to change my life for the better. It’s something I really need.”
Zayn Malik chose a different approach for his tattoo. He said, “I chose to get your name in Arabic,” which surprised Barrymore. She reacted with excitement and said, “I’m so honored!” She also added, “I’m like, I’m so excited. I’m so honored.”
While sitting during the session, Barrymore spoke about the meaning behind the moment. She said, “I’m very grateful because I hope that if and when you ever look at it, we can both just step back and maybe believe in the fact that we’re trying so hard and giving so much. And where and when is it acceptable and necessary to put ourselves in the mix of all the priorities and care and all of that.”
After the tattoos were completed, both of them looked at the results. Barrymore asked Malik, “Have you looked at your tattoo yet?” He replied, “Yeah I have. It’s really nice. It’s clean lines.” The final reveal showed Barrymore’s tattoo of the word “grace” on her wrist, while Malik had “Drew” tattooed on his forearm.
This appearance came shortly after Malik shared that he had been hospitalized on April 17 due to an illness. He later told fans, “To my fans — Thank you to all of you for your love & support now & always — been a long week and am still unexpectedly recovering,” and also said, “Heartbroken that I can’t see you all this week, I wouldn’t be in the place I am today without you guys and am so thankful for your understanding.”
Malik is still expected to begin his upcoming tour for his album Konnakol on May 12. At the same time, reports about his relationship with former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson have also been circulating, although no official confirmation has been made.
