James Cameron is full steam ahead with the Avatar franchise, confirming he is “good to go” for directing Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. At 70, the legendary filmmaker has completed work on the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash, set for release in December 2025, and is optimistic about continuing his directorial role through to the fifth installment, due in 2031.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Cameron shared, “There’s no reason not to. I’m healthy. I’ve got to make it in a vigorous way… but if I can, I’ll just do it.” The Titanic and Terminator director acknowledged that, while he’s passed projects like Alita: Battle Angel to other directors in the past, he remained creatively involved—and could take a similar approach with future Avatar films if needed.
While Avatar 4 and 5 are fully scripted and Cameron is eager to direct, he revealed he doesn’t intend to helm potential sixth and seventh installments, despite already having ideas for both. “Mortality catches up,” he told People magazine. “But we’re enjoying what we’re doing.”
The anticipation for Avatar: Fire and Ash is already high. Cameron recently previewed the film to a few select viewers and was thrilled by their reactions. “It’s definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far,” he said. The film stars returning cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Sigourney Weaver. “The work is exceptional… it’s heart-wrenching in a good way,” Cameron added.

Reflecting on the pressure to follow the record-breaking success of 2009’s Avatar, Cameron admitted he was initially hesitant to pursue sequels. “It was ours to lose,” he said, explaining it took him two years to commit to continuing the saga.
