Jimmy Kimmel hits back after Donald and Melania Trump demand he be fired

Jimmy Kimmel responds after Donald Trump and Melania Trump call for his firing over a roast joke, saying the backlash misrepresents his comments.

Jimmy Kimmel is not backing down after Donald Trump and Melania Trump publicly called for him to be fired. The late night host addressed the controversy on Jimmy Kimmel Live, responding directly to criticism over a joke he made during his “alternative” White House Correspondents’ Dinner segment. The bit, which mocked the absence of a comedian at the real event, included a line about Melania having “a glow like an expectant widow.”

That joke quickly sparked outrage from the Trumps. Melania accused Kimmel of promoting “hateful and violent rhetoric” and urged ABC to take action. Donald Trump followed up with a post demanding that the network fire Kimmel immediately.

Kimmel dismissed the backlash, saying the joke was clearly about the couple’s age difference and public dynamic, not a call to violence. He pointed out that he has consistently spoken out against gun violence and said the interpretation of his remark was being twisted.

He also expressed relief that no one was seriously hurt after the real White House Correspondents’ Dinner was disrupted by a shooting incident, calling the situation frightening and traumatic.

While pushing back, Kimmel also turned the argument around. He said that if there is concern about harmful rhetoric, it should start with Trump himself. He suggested that the conversation about tone in politics should be broader, not selective.

The comedian even referenced comments made by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who had joked about “shots fired” before the event, highlighting what he sees as hypocrisy in the outrage directed at him.

Despite renewed calls for his removal, Kimmel appeared unfazed. His response made it clear that he views the situation as political backlash rather than a genuine concern over his joke.

The controversy adds to a long running tension between Kimmel and Trump, with the host frequently using his platform to criticize the president and his administration.
