The film industry is shocked at the passing away of one of its all-time greats, Robert Redford, who passed away in his sleep on September 16, 2025, at his Utah residence. The Oscar winner and director was 87. Known for his timeless looks and subtle intensity, Redford’s untimely demise has left a huge void in Hollywood.
Marvel and DC Pay Tribute
Redford, who appeared in a blockbuster cameo as Alexander Pierce in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, was paid heartwarming tribute by Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The Russo Brothers shared a throwback picture of Redford and Robert Downey Jr., reminiscing about their days spent on sets together.
“We are saddened to hear of the passing of the incomparable Robert Redford—a legend whose acting and directing career inspired us every step of the way,” the directors wrote.
His legacy will live on in his exceptional films, tireless activism, and the profound impact of Sundance Institute on generations of filmmakers.
DC camp Co-CEO James Gunn also honored Redford from the DC camp in a genuine tweet on X (formerly Twitter), recalling the star’s impact.
“HE was THE movie star. His understated, effortless acting and refinement defined an era. Rest in peace, Robert,” Gunn tweeted, naming his top 10 Redford films including All the President’s Men, Ordinary People, and Jeremiah Johnson.
I grew up with his movies: his quiet, unforced performances and ever-present grace. He was THE movie star, and will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, Robert. If you want to watch a Redford movie that isn't the Sting or Butch Cassidy, here are ten I love:
