Patrick Dempsey has officially shut down speculation that he could enter Maine’s high-profile U.S. Senate race, saying public office is not the path he wants to take despite growing calls for him to step into politics. The Grey’s Anatomy star addressed the rumours in an op-ed published in the Portland Press Herald after Democratic nominee Graham Platner suspended his campaign and later withdrew from the race following allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, which he has denied.
Dempsey acknowledged that many people had encouraged him to run for the Senate seat, admitting he gave the idea serious thought. As a Maine native, he said he understands why people reached out and shares their concerns about the country’s future.
However, after reflecting on the possibility, Dempsey concluded that politics is not where he believes he can make the greatest impact.
“I realized the answer is no,” he wrote, explaining that while public service is honorable, he feels he can contribute more effectively through the work he is already doing.
Instead of campaigning for office, Dempsey pointed to the work of The Dempsey Center, the nonprofit organization he founded to provide free cancer care and support services. According to the actor, helping families through difficult moments has shown him the power of bringing people together beyond political divides.
Although he has never sought elected office, Dempsey has remained engaged in Maine’s civic life. Over the years, he has supported various political figures, attended public events and spoken out on issues affecting healthcare and social welfare.
The speculation surrounding Dempsey emerged after Platner’s campaign unraveled following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct from women who had previously been in relationships with him. Platner has denied all allegations, calling them false, but announced he was suspending and ultimately ending his campaign.
For now, Dempsey appears content staying away from electoral politics. While he admits he cares deeply about Maine and the direction of the United States, he believes meaningful change is not limited to holding public office.
His decision may disappoint supporters hoping to see another Hollywood figure enter politics, but Dempsey made one thing clear: his priority remains serving his community through philanthropy rather than campaigning for the Senate.
