The excitement around Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part Three has reached a new level after tickets for the highly anticipated final chapter of the science fiction trilogy went on sale. Fans rushed to book seats for premium formats, leading to heavy traffic on cinema websites and apps. Many moviegoers reportedly faced long online queues, error messages and quick sellouts as demand increased.
The latest ticket sale follows an earlier round of advance bookings that reportedly sold out quickly in April. Warner Bros. later opened early access for registered Dune Insiders, giving dedicated fans another opportunity to secure tickets before wider bookings. The huge response shows just how much interest has built around the conclusion of Villeneuve’s Dune story.
A new television spot was also released around the ticket launch. While the short video does not reveal as much of the story as a full trailer, it gives viewers several dark and mysterious glimpses of what is coming next. The footage is designed to build excitement without giving away major details about the final chapter.
Fans who managed to get through the booking rush will have access to several early screenings before the official release. IMAX 70mm screenings are scheduled to begin on December 14, followed by standard IMAX screenings on December 15. Other premium format screenings will begin on December 17, while the film is officially scheduled to release on December 18.
For Villeneuve, the big screen experience has always been an important part of his filmmaking style. Dune Part Three has been designed to make full use of large format screens. The film was captured using a combination of IMAX film cameras and IMAX certified digital lenses and includes 71 minutes of footage in an expanded aspect ratio.
Standard IMAX screens will show the expanded scenes in a 1.90:1 ratio. A smaller number of IMAX with Laser and 70mm locations will present the footage in the larger 1.43:1 format, giving audiences a wider and more immersive view.
However, watching the film on 70mm IMAX will not be easy for everyone. Only 25 theatres across the United States reportedly have the equipment required to show the film in this format. Because of the limited number of screens, tickets for these special screenings are expected to remain highly sought after.
The early screenings could also give Dune Part Three an advantage at the box office. The film is heading into a busy holiday season and will face major competition from Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. With advance bookings already creating chaos, the final Dune movie appears ready for a major theatrical run.
