Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter is set to lead a brand-new musical film for Universal Pictures, marking her first major studio starring role. The project, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland, will reimagine the timeless tale with a fresh, modern twist. Acclaimed filmmaker Lorene Scafaria, known for Hustlers and The Meddler, will write and direct the film.
Carpenter will also produce the project through her own company, alongside Marc Platt Productions and Alloy Entertainment. The announcement follows Carpenter’s recent success in music — she earned six Grammy nominations for her album Man’s Best Friend. After several years dedicated to her thriving music career, Carpenter is now ready to bring her artistic vision to the big screen.
According to sources, the singer first pitched the idea to Universal in 2024, envisioning a vibrant, music-driven reinterpretation of Alice in Wonderland. Once the concept took shape, Scafaria joined the project, bringing her signature blend of emotional storytelling and sharp humor. Carpenter will not only star in the film but also shape its creative direction, overseeing both the narrative and the soundtrack. Ryan Jones and Jacqueline Garell from Universal will oversee production, while Marc Platt and Katie McNicol serve as producers.
