The untimely demise of illustrious singer and musician Zubeen Garg has left fans all over the country stunned. On Sunday, September 21, Assam awoke to tragedy as his mortal remains reached Guwahati. The mood was somber with an air of gloom as thousands came together to bid farewell.
The mortal remains of the late icon were taken to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium), where throngs of fans and well-wishers gathered to pay respects to the iconic artist. Despondent images overwhelmed social media, especially one depicting him wife, Garima Saikia Garg, sobbing in front of his glass coffin. In a video posted by ANI, Garima is seen with her hands on the casket, clearly heartbroken. The agency informed that Garg’s body was also brought to his home so intimate family members could say a last goodbye.

Zubeen Garg sadly died in Singapore after a scuba diving accident. He had come to the city to perform at the North East Festival, which was also on the same day that the accident happened. His untimely death has created waves of grief in the fans not only in Assam but in all of India.
Garg was a multi-faceted and talented artist who began his musical education at the tender age of three with informal training from his mother. He learned tabla for 11 years from Pandit Robin Banerjee and was introduced to Assamese folk music by Guru Ramani Rai later on. He was composing his work during his school years, letting others enact it mostly.

While most famous for his compositions in Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi, Garg sang over 40 languages and dialects, demonstrating his unparalleled versatility. His place as a cultural icon and musical brilliant will endure, even as the country laments his passing.
