Most performers worry about forgetting lyrics, missing a dance step or dealing with technical issues on stage. Jennifer Lopez had a much stranger problem. A giant cricket crawling up her neck in front of thousands of people. The singer and actress recently looked back on the viral moment from her 2025 concert in Almaty, Kazakhstan, admitting that while fans found it entertaining, living through it was a completely different experience.
Speaking on the SmartLess podcast, Lopez revealed that the incident happened during one of the quieter moments of the show. Unlike her usual high-energy performances packed with choreography and costume changes, she was standing alone under a spotlight singing a slower Spanish song when something unexpected happened.
At first, she noticed the audience screaming.
The problem was that she had no idea why.
According to Lopez, the crowd’s reaction initially felt normal because audiences often cheer loudly during emotional pauses in her performances. But this time, the screams kept getting louder.
Then she felt something on her neck.
That “something” turned out to be a huge cricket making its way across her body while she was still in the middle of performing.
Instead of immediately panicking, Lopez somehow managed to stay composed long enough to finish the final line of the song before reacting. She later joked that the insect was so large it looked like a helicopter when it eventually flew away toward the stage lights.
Looking back, the 56-year-old star admitted the experience was far less funny in real time.
“It was kind of horrible,” she said, adding that if she had fully understood what was crawling on her, she probably would have been screaming along with the audience.
What makes the moment impressive is not the cricket itself but Lopez’s reaction. Most people would have immediately stopped whatever they were doing. Lopez somehow continued singing in front of thousands of fans while an insect crawled up her neck.
That’s the kind of professionalism audiences rarely think about when watching live performances.
Fans often see the glamour of world tours, elaborate costumes and sold-out arenas. What they don’t see are the unpredictable moments performers have to handle on the spot. Sometimes it’s a microphone failure. Sometimes it’s a wardrobe malfunction. And sometimes it’s a giant cricket deciding to join the show.
The original clip quickly spread across social media after the concert, with fans praising Lopez for remaining calm and continuing the performance. At the time, she even laughed about the situation on stage, telling concertgoers that the bug had been tickling her.
Now, nearly a year later, Lopez seems able to laugh about it too.
But judging by her latest comments, it is probably not a concert memory she plans on reliving anytime soon.
Of all the unexpected things that can happen during a live show, becoming an unwilling taxi service for a giant cricket has to rank near the top of the list.
