The death of Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, has been confirmed through a U.K. inquest as due to polytrauma. The former member of the now-defunct British boy band passed away on October 16 after falling off a third-story hotel balcony in Argentina. His finding is identical to an earlier Argentinian version of what caused his death, where multiple severe traumas and extensive internal and external hemorrhages took the young life.
Polytrauma is a term used to describe life-threatening injuries that affect more than one organ or system. According to the National Institutes of Health, it may cause traumatic shock or hemorrhagic hypothesis, posing a grave threat to vital functions. In Payne’s case, the cumulative effect of his injuries led to his untimely death.

Senior Coroner Crispin Butler, in a hearing conducted at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on December 17, said that more time is required to be able to elucidate the exact circumstances of Payne’s death. The continuing investigation in Argentina is being supported through official diplomatic procedures between the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
Payne’s body was flown back to the U.K. where he was buried. His former bandmates from One Direction, close family, and friends attended the funeral. According to the last autopsy report, alcohol, pink cocaine, and prescription antidepressants were found in his system when he died.
Five people arrested over death
Five people – including hotel staff and two men accused of selling drugs to the singer – have been arrested and questioned over Payne’s death.
Payne survives his family by his son Bear whom he had with his former girlfriend Cheryl Cole. The loss is tragic for loved ones and fans around the globe who seek answers about the final day of Payne’s life.
