Lizzo Opens Up About Reclaiming A Controversial Word In New Album

Lizzo explains the meaning behind her album Bitch, opens up about songwriting and firmly denies claims that she criticised Taylor Swift.

Lizzo has released her new album, B*tch, and says the title reflects how she has chosen to redefine a word that was once commonly used as an insult. The singer explained that she now sees the word as a symbol of confidence, strength and self acceptance rather than something negative.

The artist, who famously sang “I’m 100 per cent that bitch” in her 2017 hit song Truth Hurts, said the album title felt like a natural choice because of the personal meaning the word has taken on in her life and career. According to Lizzo, several female artists before her have also used the term in a positive way through their music.

Explaining her decision, Lizzo said: “Reclaiming the word Bitch is power – it’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love. So many incredible women in music have used the word for positivity like Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliot. It was only fitting to name my album Bitch because it has become my favorite word when using it on my own terms and because I am 100 per cent that bitch!”

Lizzo also spoke about how her approach to songwriting has changed over the years. She revealed that she previously spent a lot of time worrying about how listeners might react to her lyrics and whether certain lines could upset people.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, she recalled changing lyrics in the original version of Truth Hurts because she was concerned about how fans might interpret them.

She said: “I said, ‘I will never ever, ever, ever, ever be a side chick’ in the original [of Truth Hurts]. And then I was like, ‘Mm, but what if I offend side chicks?’ And so I was like, ‘I will never ever, ever, ever, ever be your side chick.’

“I always overthink these things because I know who’s consuming my music and I’m very [concerned about] how they’re going to feel, how it’s going to affect them.”

The singer also recently addressed claims circulating on social media that she had spoken negatively about Taylor Swift. The discussion began after an X user compared the performance of Taylor’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, with songs from Lizzo’s 2025 mixtape.

After seeing the post, Lizzo asked followers for clarification about its meaning. One user responded by claiming that criticism of Taylor Swift had affected Lizzo’s career. Lizzo quickly rejected the accusation and said she has never spoken negatively about Taylor or any other artist.

Responding on X, she wrote: “Are you well? First of all I have never talked s*** about Taylor Swift – also while we on the subject I’ve never talked s*** about any artist. Just because I mention an artist by name does not mean I’m talking s*** – grow tf up pls. (sic)”
