A Minecraft Movie Crosses $200 Million Domestically, Eyes Second Spot Among Top-Grossing Game Films

A phenomenal box office run continues for A Minecraft Movie, which has shattered milestones and climbed the ranks as one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations ever. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, the film has reached a staggering USD 200 million domestically within just five days in theaters surpassing the lifetime gross of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. On Thursday alone, the film added USD 7.1 million, marking the third-biggest Thursday for a video game movie, trailing only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USD 9.9 million, an 8.3 percent drop) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (USD 11.6 million, an 11.6 percent rise), the latter of which was released on Boxing Day.

Consistent Appeal and Record-Breaking Projections
The film’s performance remains robust, showing just an 8.5 percent decline from Wednesday’s earnings, which signals steady family interest and positive word of mouth. With a current domestic cume of USD 200.3 million, A Minecraft Movie becomes only the third video game adaptation in history to hit this landmark. Projections indicate that by Sunday, it will surpass Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s domestic lifetime total of USD 236 million, thus claiming the title of the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation in the United States within only 10 days of release.

Directed by Jared Hess, the PG-rated film follows four misfit teens who are pulled into the pixelated universe of Minecraft. With the guidance of legendary crafter Steve, they embark on a perilous journey through a strange and dangerous cubic realm to find their way home.

The cast also features Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen. Despite mixed critical reviews, its blend of humor, nostalgia, and striking visual effects—brought to life by Sony Pictures Imageworks, Digital Domain, and Weta FX—has captivated audiences worldwide. Already earning USD 351 million globally, A Minecraft Movie is on track to become one of the biggest game-based blockbusters of all time.
