Netflix India has unveiled the highly anticipated trailer for its upcoming mini-series, “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack,” slated for release on August 29. The series delves into the harrowing 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814, bringing to life one of the most traumatic events in India’s recent history.

The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring veteran actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, and Patralekhaa. This project also marks the OTT debut of acclaimed director Anubhav Sinha, known for his impactful dramas like Mulk, Thappad, Article 15, and Bheed. Produced under his banner, Benaras Media Works, the series promises to be a gripping retelling of the events that unfolded during the hijacking..

The trailer offers a tense and immersive experience, capturing the extreme fear and uncertainty faced by the 188 passengers aboard the ill-fated flight. It opens with the sudden takeover of the aircraft by militants, immediately plunging viewers into the chaos and desperation that ensued. Vijay Varma portrays the flight’s captain, whose psychological turmoil and steadfast resolve are central to the narrative. One particularly chilling moment depicts the plane running dangerously low on fuel, forcing the captain to issue a distress call, “Mayday, Mayday,” highlighting the dire circumstances and high-stakes decisions faced by the crew.

The series also delves into the intense diplomatic negotiations and internal governmental struggles that occurred as officials raced against time to secure the safe release of the hostages. The escalating demands of the hijackers and the pressure on Indian authorities are depicted with stark realism, providing a comprehensive look at the multifaceted crisis.

The Kandahar hijacking incident remains a significant and painful memory in India’s collective consciousness. In December 1999, Flight IC 814, en route from Kathmandu to Delhi, was hijacked and diverted to Kandahar, Afghanistan. The ensuing seven-day standoff involved complex negotiations and resulted in the release of several imprisoned militants in exchange for the hostages, a decision that sparked widespread controversy and had long-term geopolitical implications.

Anubhav Sinha’s transition to the streaming platform with this series is highly anticipated, especially given his track record of handling socially relevant and hard-hitting subjects with nuance and sensitivity. His collaboration with actors Dia Mirza and Pankaj Kapur, with whom he has worked on previous projects, adds to the expectations surrounding the series.

It’s noteworthy that renowned filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj had previously intended to create a series on the Kandahar hijacking. However, the project was shelved following controversies related to the 2021 Prime Video India series “Tandav.” With Sinha at the helm, audiences are eager to see a thought-provoking and meticulously crafted portrayal of this complex event.

“IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack” is poised to be a compelling addition to Netflix India’s lineup, offering viewers a detailed and emotionally charged depiction of a pivotal moment in Indian history. With its stellar cast, experienced director, and gripping storyline, the series is expected to not only entertain but also provoke reflection on the events and decisions that have shaped contemporary India.
