When Abhay Deol drove for 2 hours for NANU KI JAANU

0

Abhay Deol-starrer NANU KI JAANU is surely creating the right pre-release buzz. The movie will be hitting the screens on April 20, 2018, and we are sure that fans of the actor can’t wait to see him back on the big screen.

We all know that Abhay is a thorough professional, but with each passing day the actor is giving us a new surprise. Well, in a scene for NANU KI JAANU, Abhay’s character Nanu has to drive from Chattarpur to Noida. In most of the films, the makers just take a few close-up shots of the actor and long shots are done by the body double. But, that was not the case in NANU KI JAANU.

Director Faraz Haider reveals, “Abhay likes to drive, so he refused to use any body double in the film or take the east route, and drove from Chattarpur to Noida himself. It was a two-hour journey.”

We must say that Abhay is surely an actor every filmmaker would dream to work with.

NANU KI JAANU is produced by Inbox Pictures and also stars Patralekhaa in the lead role.

Varun Dhawan: I want to ‘tear’ the envelope with roles like OCTOBER

0

Basking in the glowing reviews of OCTOBER, Varun Dhawan says he wants to continue seeking roles that are unique and tear the envelope.

Excerpts from the interview:

Hello, am I speaking to the Supertar Varun Dhawan?
(Laughs) No, this is Dan (the character from OCTOBER). I still haven't come out of my character. This is that kind of an experience which I can't just leave behind.

Dan is not heroic in the filmy sense. What made you play such a character at this stage of your career?
This is what I was asked when I did BADLAPUR. I hope this question keeps coming up in my career.

You will continue to seek out roles that push the envelope?
Not just push the envelope, but 'phado' (tear) the envelope. I am not interested in doing unconventional roles that don't go all the way. I don't want to take sides as far as doing mainstream and unconventional roles are concerned.

Why should off-beat roles not be popular? When we made OCTOBER, we knew it won't get the audience of a JUDWAA. It was made within the required budget. And we were not disappointed with the results.

The collections have increased manifold.
Yes, a day after the release, the audience began to increase considerably. That was very reassuring. People have connected with the film. What we see in OCTOBER is what everyone goes through in life.

Would you be doing more such 'tearing the envelope' roles?
Yes, absolutely. But it has to be a character like the one in OCTOBER who is completely honest even about his dishonesty. We all lie to others and to ourselves. But how often is the hero allowed to admit his weaknesses on screen?

(Screenwriter) Juhi Chaturvedi has written the character as flawed and yes, quite annoying in the way he pushes his opinion about everything on others. Dan is quite overbearing. Yet he redeems himself finally. It proves there is a sensitive human being inside him. I loved my character's journey.

I didn't like the way the journey ended?
I know. A lot of people have told me it shouldn't have ended the way it did. But this was the only way it could end. If we changed the inevitable, we would be cheating.

You've had cent-per cent success so far. Even your awful DILWALE is considered a hit. Do you think OCTOBER will not interrupt your success spell?
About DILWALE, even today you will be surprised at how many people tell me they love that film. When I decided to do OCTOBER, I put my entire soul into it. After BADRINATH KI DULHANIA and JUDWAA 2, I could have done another blockbuster kind of film. But I wanted to do a character who was not so high on self-confidence.

Dan is a bit of an upstart. He isn't your average hero at all. When I heard about the role, I insisted that Shoojit Sircar cast me, although he had a completely different cast in mind. Dan is just 21-22. Much younger than me.

How old are you?
I am 30. So I am actually not as inexperienced in things like illness and grieving as you might think. I've watched both my parents lose their parents and how it affected them. And I saw how my mother did the seva (tending) of her parents when they were ill.

Somewhere, I had stored all those memories and I used it in OCTOBER.

I believe you took a massive remuneration cut in OCTOBER?
I wasn't even thinking about money when I got the chance to do OCTOBER. I just wanted to be part of this film.

What is your biggest takeaway from this film?
It has definitely taught me to be more considerate towards others. It is not just important to feel for someone. It is also important to express that feeling. This film has also taught me to be sensitive about what goes on around me.

People die, people have accidents, but Life goes on. Nobody cares beyond a point. That's really sad. Most importantly, now after doing OCTOBER, I want to spend more time with my family.

And yet you've moved out of your family home into your own place?
That's because I needed more space. And my own private space.

Did you buy your home as preparation for marriage?
Nothing like that. Of course it will happen in good time.

Humour: Salman Khan to star in the modern remake of SABSE BADA RUPAIYA

0

“Logon ka paise par se vishwas bana rahe, hamari movie ka yehi maqsad hai” (the only aim of our movie is to restore faith on the power of money amongst people) says producer director Mani Kapoor who is set to remake the modern version of the 1976 social drama SABSE BADA RUPAIYA that starred Vinod Mehra and Mehmood. Superstar Salman Khan will star in the new age version. Here are the excerpts from the exclusive conversation held between the producer Mani Kapoor and brother of the nation our dear bhai aka Salman Khan.

Swagat hai tumhara bhai (a hearty welcome to you brother) exclaims blockbuster filmmaker Mani Kapoor as superstar Salman Khan enters into the spacious drawing room of the producer bungalow.

Kaho kaise yaad kiya (tell me , why you called) probes the actor in his trade mark poker tone.

Mani Kapoor : Bhai, I hope you didn’t have any problems in jail

Salman Khan: Nahi, I am used to this jailgiri.. bro.. I am chulbul pandey the famous cop on screen, it was like a routine for me, I immediately got into the skin and fulfilled the ‘commitment’ and made the prisoners feel at ease you know. I am glad that my presence brought smiles to their faces and made them happy. Who clicks selfies in jail normally?..In fact I have increased my fan base now.. my forthcoming flick will be a bigger hit.

Mani Kapoor : Kudos to you bhai, you are a living legend. It’s incredible to find that how remarkably you have restored the faith on humanity and money at one go.

Salman Khan (surprised): Is that so.

Mani Kapoor : yo.. oh ho.. I mean yes brother you did it.

Salman Khan : Kindly explain.

Mani Kapoor: Bhai, you are not just a note chapne ki dukan ( a money printing machine) you are a rare unique combo of the raw material, machine and the end product all in one. Your bail from the recent blackbuck case has restored faith in money amongst people and I would love to announce the remake of the movie SABSE BADA RUPAIYA starring you. We are using the title and the element of money in this modern remake, it will have an altogether new story and it will feature you in a never before seen avatar.

Salman khan (smiles): Never before seen avatar.. baat dil pe toh aa gayi. .. par dimage mein nahi

Mani Kapoor: This will be in the lines of a biopic on the superstar Salman Khan with some rare real life footages starring the superstar Salman Khan himself. The title is deliberately kept as a gimmick, trust me, SABSE BADA RUPAIYA will be a unique adage on the power of money and stardom that will have deep layers commenting on the class divide, poverty and immaturity of people and media in understanding the difference between a celebrity and an individual plus it will have shades of a psychological thriller as well.

Salman khan : Biopic mein psychological thriller.. people will go mad.

Mani Kapoor: That’s the twist, people will go mad, I mean crazy for you like never before, hear me out please.

Salman Khan : Shoot.

ManI Kapoor: As I said it will star the superstar Salman Khan as Salman Khan, it will begin with that faithful day you went for hunting during the shooting of HUM SATH SAATH HAI.. truth should come out brother..

Salman Khan : What the hell, I will shoot you and surrender myself in jail. To hell with everyone, I have had enough of this, I can,t handle it anymore…. I am a human being..

Mani Kapoor : Exactly!! As the truth will come out, the movie will reveal the reason on how the incident haunted you and gave you sleepless nights and you decided to do something for the underprivileged and launched Being Human. Today Being Human earns in cores and it is for the welfare of the society. SABSE BADA RUPAIYA is a statement that our aim is to remove poverty and not poor people. Poverty has to be removed from the society to bring equality, aaj Rupaiya sabse bada hai, itna bada ki log kanoon bhi kharid lete hai par kal nahi rahega kal insaniyat badi hogi ( today the power of money is ultimate, it can even buy the judiciary but it won,t remain in future, tomorrow people will understand humanity and good deeds if their stomachs are filled and they get a proper sleep and shelter). People will understand the value of money and faith on rupaiya will be ‘coined’ for good.. bhai it’s a proven fact that Blackbuck are severely affected by natural calamities such as floods and droughts and are getting reduced, you may be on the wrong side due to ignorance but the nation is ignoring the bigger picture over here. If resources were adequate, floods and droughts could have been controlled and the community of blackbucks would not be on the decreasing side.. so who is killing those Blackbucks.. ? Lack of care and resources and resources come from money bole toh Rupaiya so.. SABSE BADA RUPAIYA..

Salman Khan ( gets up and after completing his famous ‘Dabangg’ jig reframes this famous dialogue from KICK): Wah Sir!! Pehle Controversy Salman Khan ke peche, ab Salman khan controversy ke peeche – will be too much fun.. we should do this.. zindagi ka kya bharosa.. kab kisko kaha maut aa jaye.. soote, jagte, chalet phirte.. (life has no guarantee, it can come anytime to anyone and anywhere)

BEYOND THE CLOUDS Movie Review: Universally passionate & contemplatively arresting

0

The impression Iranian maestro Majid Majidi has left in the world is profound; The beautiful Oscar nominated THE CHILDREN OF HEAVEN, the poignant gem – THE SONG OF SPARROWS, the politically lyrical BARAN & the powerful WILOW TREE. Majid Majidi is an auteur who has mastered the art of capturing human nature with sensitive stories mostly centered on kids that underlines the pathos of existing social circumstances with ethos of humanity and hope.

When a filmmaker with such impeccable sensibility makes his debut in Bollywood which is labeled as temple of melodrama, the connoisseurs of art especially in Asia look forward with bated breath.

So what does the master Majid Majidi does over here?. Well, he follows the golden rule of ‘Doing in Rome what the Romans do’ Majidi narrates a melodramatic tale of a brother and a sister in the city of dreams – Mumbai who are victims of faith and circumstances and how they find purpose and redemption after committing sins.

Majid Majidi in association with Mehran Kashani takes an unexpected turn as the movie begins with a bang on depiction of the class divide in the city of dreams. A long opening shot introduces Amir (debutant Ishaan Khatter). Amir is rushing between speeding vehicles against a backdrop of huge hoardings he sprints under the road bridge amidst those underprivileged families and hops on to the back of a waiting motorbike. Amir is a drug peddler who enjoys his swag and is free spirited. Faith takes an evil turn when police raids the hideout of these young outlaws who have believed to have taken into crime due to circumstances. A pulse rising chase between the cops and Amir ends up at a laundry and we are introduced to Amir’s sister Taara (Malavika Mohanan). Tara’s colleague Akshi (Goutam Ghose), protects Amir from cops and hides him. Believing that Tara is now his property, the next day Akshi assaults her resulting in a violent reaction from Tara that lands her up in jail and Akshi hospitalized.

The complexity of Amir and Tara increases further with Akshi regaining consciousness but loosing the power to speak. With dark clouds glooming over Amir and Tara, the sibling find hope in difficult situations. Amir bonds with Akshi’s mother and his two daughters while Taara finds a companion in Chotu – the child of her fellow prisoner played by Tannishtha Chatterjee.

It’s overwhelming to see Majid Majidi pressing the adrenaline button of energy in his bollywood debut. Though the filmmaker is an outsider as far as the shanty alleys and dirty lanes of Mumbai slums are concerned, the filmmaker is surprisingly at ease but undesirably in competition with Danny Boyle who helmed the modern masterpiece SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE that celebrated the essence of bollywood in the buoyant celebration of love, lost, life and sacrifice.

As the children start sharing the screen with the gown ups Amir and Tara, Majidi smartly in this touted grown up version of Majidi’s previous CHILDREN OF HEAVEN makes the audience enter his familiar zone as it finds its true emotional colors of passion filled with sequences that are pure gem. Certainly Majid Majidi is one of those filmmakers who are inspired by the genius of Satyajit Ray and there are moments in the film which proves Majidi’s fondness towards the great Indian filmmaker.

Ironically, the Iranian master’s Bollywood debut is less ‘epic’ than his Iranian mega budget MUHAMMAD : THE MESSENGER OF GOD that ran into controversies and it may be argued that Majidi in his subconscious mind may be thinking of playing safe and restored to his known elements like birds, children and innocence in this melodramatic tale of a brother and sister with echoing tones of redemption every now and then where every character is a victim of circumstance.

Plus it will also be observed that the director has not made a strong statement on the class divide and prevailing situations in India, though he is bang on in selecting the traditional, colorful festival of Holi as a metaphor in accumulating the crux of this physiological melodrama that reiterates the theme of good and evil.

The pitch perfect casting serves as the apt vehicle to convey the vision of Majidi. The tousle-haired debutant Ishaan Khatter is a charismatic swag that demands attention and is bound to make his place in hearts of cinegoers in future beyond doubt.
Malayalam actress Malavika Mohanan in his bollywood debut is intense, powerful and solid as the sister Tara.

Bengali talent Ghose is competent as Akshi. Sharada Jhumpa who plays Akshi’s mother is first rate and the child artistes who play Akshi’s daughters are excellent. Ditto for child actor who plays chotu. Tannishtha Chatterjee is natural in her limited appearance.

Technically a masterly crafted piece of art, BEYOND THE CLOUDS is exquisitely shot by Anil Mehta, the ace Indian cinematographer brings those magical moments especially the one behind the cloth/bed sheet and shadow playing using the right tone and colour for the different moods creating the required artistic contrast. BEYOND THE CLOUDS is visually striking.
A. R. Rahman score adds momentum but lacks the take home quality. Though a nostalgic feeling of his iconic ‘Mukkala Mukabla Laila O Laila’ stays for a while.

Iranian master Majid Majidi in his highly awaited Bollywood debut is surprisingly energetic. Though BEYOND THE CLOUDS travels the known terrain of a melodrama involving a brother and sister that offers tribute to the good and evil theme, the prolific filmmaker adds his winningly emphatic sensitivity to the proceedings that is eloquently nurtured by Ishaan Khatter and Malavika Mohanan’s poignant performance. This heartfelt and sensitive adage on the triumph of good over evil ends on a beautiful note of hope with that closing shot that stamps, cements and underlines the magic of Majidi we know.
