Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand win Best Actors at 90th Oscars

Gary Oldman, for essaying former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in DARKEST HOUR, and Frances McDormand for her role as a grieving mother in THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, won the best actor and best actress in a leading role categories at the 90th Academy Awards here.

McDormand, 60, pipped, among others, THE POST star Meryl Streep, who scored her 21st nomination and the 17th in this category at the Oscars.

She has won an Academy Award over two decades after first winning the honour in 1996 for FARGO.

In THREE BILLBOARDS…, she plays Mildred Hayes, a mother grieving over her daughter's rape and murder.

McDormand left an impact with her acceptance speech after she asked every female nominee in the room to stand up, and asked male gatekeepers to ask them about their projects and ideas not just at Oscar after-parties, but in office meetings following awards season.

As her fellow nominees stood, she said: "We all have stories to tell and projects we need financed." She urged stars to demand inclusion riders — requirements for gender or racial diversity — in their contracts.

Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster presented the Best Actress trophy to McDormand, in a break from tradition that the previous year's Best Actor winner presents the award.

As for Oldman, it was his second nomination in the Actor in a Leading Role category. He was previously nominated for TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY in 2011.

While accepting the award, Oldman said: "I've lived in America for the longest time, and I am deeply grateful to her for the loves and the friendships I have made and the many wonderful gifts it has given me. My home, my livelihood, my family, and now Oscar."

He also thanked Churchill, who he said "has been marvelous company on what can be described as an incredible journey".

Oldman, 59, also took a moment to express gratitude to his 98-year-old mother.

THE SHAPE OF WATER wins Best Director, Best Picture at the Oscars

Guillermo del Toro, who faces a copyright infringement lawsuit for THE SHAPE OF WATER, has won the Best Director and Best Picture Academy Awards for the movie at the 90th Oscars ceremony here.

THE SHAPE OF WATER, a fantasy drama, has been in the midst of allegations that it is a copy of a 1969 play LET ME HEAR YOU WHISPER.

The film stars Sally Hawkins as a mute cleaner working in a Cold War-era lab facility, who bonds with a sea creature being kept there.

It dominated the Academy Awards' nomination pack with nods in a maximum of 13 categories this year.

The Achievement in Directing nomination was de Toro's first in this category and his fourth overall. He also won the Best Picture, and was nominated in the Original Screenplay category this year.

He became the third Mexican filmmaker in the last five years to win best director, after Alfonso Cuaron for "Gravity" in 2014 and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for BIRDMAN and THE REVENANT in 2015 and 2016 respectively, reports the Guardian.

In his acceptance speech, del Toro said: "I am an immigrant like Alfonso and Alejandro, my compadres. Like Gael (Garcia Bernal), like Salma (Hayek) and like many, many of you. And in the last 25 years, I've been living in a country all of our own.

"Part of it is here, part of it is in Europe, part of it is everywhere. Because I think that the greatest thing our art does and our industry does is to erase the lines in the sand. We should continue doing that when the world tells us to make them deeper."

del Toro was earlier nominated for his original screenplay for PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006).

Ali Fazal-Judi Dench’s VICTORIA & ABDUL loses out on Oscars

Indian actor Ali Fazal-starrer VICTORIA & ABDUL with Judi Dench in the key role, lost out on a chance to win an Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards here on Sunday.

The movie was nominated in two categories – Best Costume Design for Consolata Boyle and Make-up and Hairstyling for Daniel Phillips and Lou Sheppard.

The Best Costume Design award was bagged by Mark Bridges for black comedy PHANTOM, and in the movie Make-Up and Hairstyling segment, the team behind DARKEST HOUR -A Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Mallinowski and Lucy Sibbick – took away the accolades for the prosthetic work required to turn actor Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill.

The awards were presented by screen legend Eva Marie Saint, who won Best Actress in 1955 for ON THE WATERFRONT. She received a standing ovation when she took the stage.

Helmed by Stephen Frears, VICTORIA & ABDUL is based on a novel by Shrabani Basu. It revolves around the relationship shared by Queen Victoria and Abdul, who was a Munshi in her government. It also shows his journey on how he became one of the most powerful figures in the court.

The role of the queen is played by Dench and Abdul is essayed by Ali.

Ali had earlier spoken out about the hard work that went in for the movie.

"I remember sitting for hours in a day just for my fittings and markings. And how meticulously Consolata Boyle would tailor them to match the period we were depicting. It was like watching a painter unravel a masterpiece.

"The same goes for Daniel Phillips, a Golden Globe winner, who was responsible for all our looks," he had said earlier this year when the two nominations were announced.

Sridevi was her own competition and she had set goal for herself at every step in her life, said Jayaprada, who worked with her in many movies.

"When we worked together in films, we used to compete against each other. It was a healthy competition," recalled Jayaprada while paying rich tributes to Sridevi at a condolence meeting here on Sunday night.

Jayaprada recalled that they acted together in 15 Telugu and Hindi movies and whenever they had to appear in combination, there used to be competition, be it delivering a dialogue or giving an expression.

The former MP along with several personalities from Telugu film industry paid their tributes to Sridevi at a condolence meeting organised by film producer and politician T. Subbarami Reddy.

Sridevi died last week in Dubai due to accidental drowning at a hotel bathtub. Her mortal remains were cremated in Mumbai on Wednesday after several fans and film fraternity paid their last respects. She was 54.

In a career that lasted 50 years, Sridevi acted in 300 films in various languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. Some of her iconic films include SADMA, NAGINA, MR. INDIA, KHUDA GAWAH, JAGADEKA VEERUDU ATHILOKA SUNDARI, KSHANA KSHANAM and GOVINDA GOVINDA.

Jayaprada said she still could not believe that Sridevi is no longer amidst them. "When I woke up to watch the television, it was a big shock not just for the film industry and her fans but for all the people," she said.

Recalling her association with the late actress, Jayaprada said she believes that it was her good fortune that she got an opportunity to work with Sridevi. She said the loss was irreparable.

Jayaprada said Sridevi was a caring mother. "She wanted to see her daughter Jhanvi becoming a good actor like her. She, however, left us before watching her daughter making the debut."

Veteran actor Krishnam Raju recalled that he acted with Sridevi in 4 to 5 films. "She always used to call me sir. She had lot of respect for her seniors. She did not use to even sit in front of elders," he said.

Subbarami Reddy, who co-produced two movies CHANDNI and LAMHE featuring Sridevi, recalled his long association with Sridevi. He was even planning a function to mark Sridevi's 50 years in films.

The MP said Sridevi was not just a great actor but was also a good human being, a loving wife and caring mother.

Actors Naresh, Jeevitha, Rajasekhar, Amla Akkineni, Kota Srinivas rao, Jagapati Babu, Babu Mohan, Ali, Movie Artist Association (MAA) President Sivaji Raja, producer Allu Arvind, writer Parchuri Gopala Krishna and others paid their tributes to Sridevi.

Veteran actor Babu Mohan, who could not make it to meeting, sent his condolence message.
