Producer Arjun Kapoor: KEDARNATH not shelved

0

Abhishek Kapoor's directorial KEDARNATH, which is caught in a legal battle, has not been shelved, says Arjun N. Kapoor of the production house KriArj Entertainment.

KEDARNATH was supposed to launch actor Saif Ali Khan's daughter Sara Ali Khan.

Asked if the producers kept the career of the young actress in mind while moving the Bombay High Court to enforce their rights on the film, Arjun told IANS: "Firstly, the film is not shelved. It 'is' and not 'was'. It is very much on. I know, as a producer, that many fortunes are involved with every film."

"So Sara's career is surely important for KriArj. Not only hers, but everyone involved in the film. Having said that, there was a valid reason for us to move the court and we are confident that things will be sorted out soon."

"It is just a matter of time (before) we finish the film and share it with the world," he added.

The movie was being jointly made by KriArj Entertainment, T-Series, Balaji Motion Pictures and director Abhishek Kapoor's Guy In The Sky Pictures (GITS).

While KriArj Entertainment's representatives blamed the director's unprofessional behaviour and mismanagement as the reason for delay in the movie, his representatives alleged there was "lack of transparency in KriArj Entertainment's financial dealings".

KriArj Entertainment's co-founder Prernaa Arora assured everything would be taken care of.

"We are seeking justice from the high court and, at the same time, there could be moves to come together and make the film. Anything can happen."

"'Kedarnath' is our film. We tried to figure out the right way to do things… We are nobody to speak on anybody individually but we are waiting for the court procedure," she added.

Has its lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput being replaced?

Arora said: "No. Sushant is the hero of the film as long as KEDARNATH remains."

KriArj Entertainment's lawyer Lavin C. Hirani said in a statement on Saturday: "We will be moving the Bombay High Court for enforcing our rights on the film by early next week and we hope to secure the necessary reliefs from the honourable court."

Madhurima Tuli: TV has tried experimenting but audiences have not accepted it

0

Actress Madhurima Tuli started her career in Bollywood with BACHNA AE HASEENO (2008) and later got noticed when she appeared opposite Akshay Kumar in BABY (2015). Since then she did few films down south and currently has been enchanting the audience with her portrayal of the lead role of Princess Chandrakanta in Colors TV series Chandrakanta.

In an exclusive conversation with Glamsham the actress talks about how it was a dream come true to play Chandrakanta. She also shared her views on future of digital media and why we need both content driven films as well as commercial no-brainer films. Read on…

Excerpts:

How has the experience of playing a popular character Chandrakanta been so far?
Chandrakanta was an iconic show. I loved watching it when I was a kid. Actually I never thought then that Chandrakanta will be made again and I will be getting the opportunity to play the lead in it. It feels great playing a warrior princess. I am trying to bring my own version to it and I have so many disguise look like playing a man or an old lady. So it is like a dream come true role for me.

Were you always inclined towards taking up acting as a career?
I was an athlete however in back of the mind I always wanted to model. But I didn't know how to take it ahead. Destiny helped me in its own way and I ended up being a part of this industry.

Out of all the things you have done so far (ads, web series, films) which project was the most creatively satisfying?
I haven't done many films but by doing Chandrakanta I have lived so many characters that as of now this show has been very creatively satisfying for me, definitely ads too as I have got some beautiful ads which has its own charm. They are short yet the most engaging.

In this industry have you ever been on the receiving end of nepotism?
Well thankfully I haven't faced nepotism so far.

What are your views regarding digital media? Do you think they have the potential to overtake television and eventually 70mm screens?
Oh yes! The Digital space is really coming up with good content which the youth is really enjoying. I am not too sure if it will overtake 70mm but probably TV it may in the coming 4-5 years. Some web series are doing better than TV serials these days, it wasn't like that few years ago. So you never know what happens next.

Do you think Indian television is still relying heavily on regressive content rather than experimenting with new stuffs?
To be honest I feel TV has tried experimenting but the audience have not accepted it. They still enjoy the saas bahu drama. So what's the point wasting money on experimenting in TV? The makers instead prefer experimenting on digital space. But yet there are few producers who take the risk as it creatively satisfies them. Some succeed some don't.

As it’s a month of love what's your idea of a perfect romantic date?
My idea of a perfect date is to go on a long drive and then maybe for a candlelight dinner. Basically I would like to spend the time with my guy.

Most romantic thing someone has done for you?
Once I was shooting in Rajasthan and it was my birthday, this friend of mine came all the way from Mumbai to propose me on my birthday. That was really very romantic

A novel that you can read again and again and one song that is stuck in your head.
Honestly speaking I haven't read too many novels yet. But at this point I think it would be Meluha. And one song that is stuck in my head right now is ‘I'm like a bird’ by Nelly Furtado.

If given a chance what would be the two things that you would like to change about this industry?
Casting couch. If that's changed everything is good.

The year 2017 saw some super stars delivering super flop films (TUBELIGHT, JAB HARRY MET SEJAL) while small budget and content driven films walked away with all the accolades. So do you think it’s high time our stars instead of banking upon their stardom should start using their position to make more engaging films rather than relying on no-brainer entertainments?
I think we need both kinds of films. Yes it is high time they do more content driven film. But I am sure they are making an effort like Mr. Aamir Khan. But we do need a commercial no-brainer film as well. In these crazy times that we are living in such films relaxes your mind.

Sonam Kapoor recently said that we are light years behind of Hollywood when it comes to reporting about sexual harassment or talking about gender pay gap issue. Do you agree with her?
Yes I agree with her. It is a male dominating society. Still in our country if a girl is sexually harassed she will think ten times before complaining thinking ‘what if the man takes revenge for doing so?’ or ‘what if nobody marries her?’ or ‘log kya kahenge’?. This can only change once the girl gets an assurance that if anything happens to her, she don't have to think twice to complain as the law is there for her protection.

What’s next in the pipeline?
As of now I am too occupied with Chandrakanta. But in between I am taking out time for ads, short films. Once this gets over I will see what to take up next.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI Movie Review: EXCEPTIONAL!

0

When it hurts and hurts so good!!. Winning top honors at the BAFTA 2018, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, the third feature written and directed by playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS) is a masterly constructed voyage of rage, despair, hope and redemption.

The 2006 Academy award winner for the live action short SIX SHOOTER churns an exceptional mix of black humour and intense drama with multi-layered intricacies of rage, grief, feminisms, machismo, and humanity powered by an act of remarkable brilliance by Frances McDormand.

Anger, rage, resentment is an emotion which time and again had fascinated people in different ways. Humans love to pamper it for themselves but hate to find it in others. Cinema around the world had manipulated the themes of rage, grief, and redemption for ages but in a rarest of the rare occasion, we find such an extraordinary swirl of rage that flirts with black humour at will.

Though revenge is the emotion that is constant in the heart and mind of the protagonist Mildred Hayes played by Academy Award winner Frances McDormand (FARGO), Martin McDonagh paints this picture predominantly in dark comic tones that makes you laugh at tense situations from time to time. Finding no development in her daughter’s murder case for months, Mildred Hayes Frances McDormand) creates a sensation by painting three signs leading into her town.

The three billboards painted in red wear three linked messages in black capital letters: “Still No Arrests?” “How Come, Chief Willoughby?” And the devastating last one, “Raped While Dying.”. A battle begins. William Willough (Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson) the police chief of the town is a family man with an adorable wife and two lovely daughters, his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), a mother’s boy with a penchant for violence are against Mildred. How the gusty mother who has lost her young daughter fights with the Ebbing’s law enforcement, the clergy, the sexist mindset of the society, finds the crux of this extraordinary tale of rage that remarkably pushes its envelope from the mundane rape, revenge dramas for an unforgettable cut above experience.

Martin McDonagh uses the rage, rape, revenge theme as a tool and makes the audience meditate as he mediates his philosophy/debate on anger and how to channelize this emotion. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a profound piece of cinema that is remarkably grounded and thought-provoking as well. “You’re culpable,” says Mildred to a priest who visits her house to share his and the town’s displeasure over the sensational billboards. Mildred outburst is a striking pathos on what is prescribed and what is practiced.

Even after having a protagonist, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a movie that doesn’t have a dedicated antagonist. There are bad guys around and you can’t single one out.

In spirit, the movie may appear somewhat similar to Kenneth Lonergan’s brilliant redemption drama MANCHESTER BY THE SEA somewhere but it’s the exceptional quality of Martin McDonagh to infuse humor in seriously tense situations takes you to an altogether different trance.

Frances McDormand as Mildred the small town mom is a hero, she is right, fearless, stubborn, crazy and angry wearing blue jumpsuits as if she is on a war. Frances delivers an unforgettable performance that will stay for ages.

Harrelson plays the tough chief brilliantly, though the illness manipulation could have been easily avoided. After McDormand, its Sam Rockwell as the violent prone momma boy that adds tremendous weight to this rare rage saga, that takes a riveting coming of age tones with subdued heroisms. In fact, in the deeper sense, there is an undercurrent of heroisms running amongst the supporting cast as well like Sam, Harrelson and even in the character of midget played by Peter Dinklage.

On the flipside, the town created by McDonagh with the help of Ben Davis lenses and Inbal Weinberg ‘s production design is scarcely populated and the chief illness manipulation are its minor drawbacks.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a rare story of rage that comes with age with an intoxicating mix of dark humour, with the pathos of grief and striking comments on feminism, machismo, and humanity. Never ever in recent years, rage has taken such dimensions and reached a point that it’s not just a barn burner it’s an exceptional tale of redemption, a soul-stirring cry.
