Yo Yo Honey Singh: Remakes should be done properly

0

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh, who has reworked and given a modern touch to songs like 'Dil chori' and 'Chote chote peg maar', says recreations should be done properly.

"I try to keep the hook line and the melody of old songs while remaking songs and the new input shouldn't come out of the blue. It should match with the songs. It should seem like a new song with an old feel… I feel that remakes should be done properly so that we do not get cursed by their original artists," Singh said in a statement to IANS.

The rapper, who has given hits like 'Sunny sunny', 'Blue eyes' and 'Brown rang', says the Hindi film industry now has a lot of great artists.

"Everyone is doing good work. In fact all the new people who have come are very crazy and we are getting to hear good music and lyrics," added the 'Angrezi beat' rapper, who has a huge fan following.

On the collaboration with Hansraj Hans's song 'Dil chori' for SONU KE TITU KI SWEETY, he said: "I have heard his songs since childhood. 'Dil chori' was a crazy song.

"The idea generally came into my head that which old Punjabi song, which was a hit pan-India before could be remade… Talking about other songs we made 'Tote tote hogaya' into 'Chote chote peg maar'. This song is sung by Hansraj's son Navraj Hans."

What else is in Singh's kitty?

"I have made over two dozens of songs and I am making more. A lot is about to come. Will try to give you all songs back to back which will be a mix of dance, love and R&B songs," he said.

PAD MAN stars hope to break silence on menstruation

0

Actors Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor, who feature in the forthcoming movie PAD MAN — a film highlighting awareness on menstrual hygiene — have collaborated for a video '#AbSamjhautaNahin – The Shopping List', stressing on how the silence around menstruation needs to be broken.

The video, by Culture Machine's digital channel 'Blush' along with ITC's Vivel, is a spoken word piece listing alternatives to sanitary pads that women in most parts of the country resort to during periods — and they range from old and dirty rags to unsafe objects like ash, coconut husk and hay.

It concludes with Akshay and Sonam urging viewers to donate a minimum of Rs 400 to The Vatsalya Foundation in order to facilitate a year-round availability of sanitary pads to women in various parts of the country.

Akshay said in a statement: "The sense of shame around menstruation is compounded by lack of hygiene products. This can make life difficult for women and girls, who often miss work or school when they're having their periods. Through the video, we wish to bring out things in the open, so the chance for their being taboos and stigmas kind of starts to dissipate."

Sonam said: "Due to the secrecy surrounding menstruation, many disadvantaged women and girls end up using unhygienic material which result in serious infections. Through the video, we wish to educate citizens of the country and break the culture of silence around menstruation"."

With the funds raised through this video, Sakhi Pads will be purchased and distributed to underprivileged women, said Swathi Mukherjee, Director, The Vatsalya Foundation.

Radhika Apte: Menstruation taboos exist among both genders

0

Actress Radhika Apte, who plays a key role in Akshay Kumar-starrer PAD MAN, says the menstruation taboo has not only existed among men but also among women who are conditioned for years not to talk about the natural process openly.

PAD MAN, based on the story of a real-life hero, addresses the issue of menstrual hygiene and is aimed at creating awareness about it.

Asked if the film can bring any change in the society, Radhika told IANS: "I think the taboo attached to menstruation is not only among men, but women as well. It is happening for years. Even women feel uncomfortable to talk about it openly.

"Mothers taught their daughters how not to talk about it openly, not to go to the kitchen or not to enter the temple. So it does not just exist among men but women as well.

"Though I think one film cannot bring all the changes to a practice that is happening for ages, if people start talking about menstruation comfortably, be aware of the importance of menstruation hygiene, it would be more than enough for us. And it is also about the journey of an individual who struggled through his life for a cause. It is an incredible story."

PAD MAN, releasing on Friday, is based on the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who brought about a near revolution by introducing a machine capable of producing low-cost sanitary pads.

As an artiste, Radhika is proud to be a part of a poignant story like this.

Starting her acting career in theatre, Radhika has acted not only in Bollywood films but also in various regional language films ranging from those in Bengali and Tamil to Telugu and Malayalam. She has been appreciated by critics and audience for some of her fine performances in films like RAKHT CHARITRA, BADLAPUR, PARCHED, PHOBIA, MANJHI – THE MOUNTAIN MAN and KABALI.

Asked if putting in so much work for her characters in every film at times exhausts her, Radhika said: "I like to work hard for a character that I play. I enjoy the process of doing my homework. It does not exhaust me as it is enriching. For a performing artiste, it is the biggest high."

This year, the actress is working on several projects including films like BAZAAR, BHAVESH JOSHI, SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER and web series 'Sacred Games'.

Does she find any difference shooting for digital content from a feature film?

"I see no difference when I work in a web series and a film. There is absolutely no difference when we are shooting on set. It is just that a web series takes a few more days than a film," she said.

Since the actress has worked with some of the finest film directors of the country, asked how it helps her in her craft, she said "For an actor, a lot of the time it depends on the director, the writer and editors because it is ultimately a collaborative art. But then there are sometimes, that director gives an actor freedom to bring their creative contribution to the character."

Radhika has worked with various directors — Sriram Raghavan, Prakash Raj, R Balki, Leena Yadav and Anurag Kashyap — whose world of cinema is sometimes polls apart.

"The idea is to collaborate with different directors, working with different creative energy, and different perspectives of people… That is how we create something new. The job of an actor is to match up with a different creative energy."

Octavia Spencer roped in for horror-thriller MA

Actress Octavia Spencer is reuniting with THE HELP director Tate Taylor for MA — a new film which is being described as a combination of a horror film and a psychological thriller.

MA will be produced by Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions, the makers of INSIDIOUS, THE PURGE and the Oscar-nominated GET OUT, reports variety.com.

"It's dark material, but it's also really fun," Taylor said.

"Octavia is so damn likable that we usually see her in certain roles. But she is such a good actress and this is such a complex character that if I do my job right, people in the audience are going to want to push pause and say, ‘Can we please take you out for coffee so you don't do what you're about to do'."

Juliette Lewis, an Oscar nominee for CAPE FEAR, and Luke Evans, last seen in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, will co-star.

Production on the project will begin in Mississippi next week, with some of the shooting taking place on Taylor's 100-acre spread and Greek Revival mansion.

Spencer, who formerly lived with Taylor when they were trying to break out in the movie business, will be staying with him.

"It's going to be a blast. We'll be living in my house in Mississippi and shooting on my land during the day, and then making dinner and telling stories and breaking bread later that night," Taylor said.
