Nag Ashwin’s “Kalki 2898 AD” has garnered significant attention, not only for its impressive cast—featuring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan—but also for its rich visual and thematic elements. Released on June 27, the film has sparked numerous discussions online, especially regarding its influences and standout scenes.

One scene, in particular, has resonated with many viewers. Deepika Padukone’s character, SUM-80, aka Sumathi, who is pregnant, walks through fire in a desperate bid to escape. This imagery has led to intriguing comparisons with Daenerys Targaryen, aka Khaleesi, from “Game of Thrones.” In the iconic scene from the episode “Fire and Blood,” Daenerys walks into a fire with her dragon eggs and emerges unscathed. Fans quickly drew parallels, with some even dubbing Deepika as “Khaleesi.”

One fan shared a poster of Deepika on X (formerly Twitter), humorously titling it, “Deepika Targaryen: The First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Shambhala, Khaleesi of the Great complex, Mother of Kalki.” Another user posted a GIF of Daenerys, noting, “This scene came to my mind during Deepika’s interval portion… both are same same but different.” The sentiment was echoed by others, with one fan writing, “Deepika was literally Daenerys Targaryen in the interval.”

However, not everyone was surprised by Deepika’s fiery ordeal. A user pointed out that Deepika has portrayed a similar scene before, referencing her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmaavat,” where her character self-immolates. They humorously wrote, “Nag: fire lo walk chesthu vellali. Deepika Padukone: idhi manaki mamulu vishayame. (Nag: You have to walk through fire. Deepika: I already did it.)”

Set in a dystopian future where the last city standing is Kashi, “Kalki 2898 AD” features Prabhas as a bounty hunter named Bhairava and Deepika as a test subject called Sumathi. Kamal Haasan plays Supreme Yaskin, and Amitabh Bachchan portrays Ashwatthama. The film has made a significant impact at the box office, grossing ₹191.5 crore worldwide in all languages on its opening day.

The comparisons to Western influences, particularly “Game of Thrones,” along with the rich tapestry of Indian mythology, highlight the film’s broad appeal and the intricate storytelling that Nag Ashwin has woven. Fans continue to dissect and discuss the film, celebrating its cultural references and the powerful performances of its cast.
