LIFE IN A METRO, GANGSTER, MURDER – Pick up any of the successful films directed by Anurag Basu and one common factor amongst each of these is a dark streak that runs through the theme. Realizing that he was making far too many dark films over the years, Anurag decided to take the plunge into something as sweet-n-saccharine as BARFI!.

“Yes, I really went through that period of introspection,” chuckles Anurag, “Each of my films so far had a passionate-n-dark look and feel to it. I was telling a lot of stories centered on extra marital affairs and all. However, now that my daughter is growing up, I am telling her a lot of light-hearted and warm stories. Meri khud ki zindagi mein bhi bahaut badlaav aaya hai. Mera kahaani bataane ka andaaz bhi change ho gaya hai. I was inspired to do something different and this is how BARFI! came in.”
CHECK OUT: BARFI! wouldn’t have happened without Ranbir
This is when he also decided that the film’s composer would be none other than Pritam who has created unforgettable melodies from him in the past. Though Anurag did take a diversion for KITES where Rajesh Roshan (for obvious reasons) was the chosen one, he was back with his thick buddy Pritam for BARFI!.
“And to think of, for a few weeks Pritam and I couldn’t crack a single song,” he reveals, “Both of us realise that there are certain expectations that everyone has from us. We had to deliver something completely different music. Fortunately or unfortunately, Pritam has been so crowded with the pressure of delivering item songs that his real self has not yet been revealed. However, I can assure that music of BARFI!, which is made of six tracks, is so soulful that you would hear an entirely new Pritam. Just wait and watch.”
We are for sure.
