Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR starrer ‘War 2′, which released on the Independence Day weekend, was one of the most talked-about films of the year. The audience was eagerly waiting for this film. Being the sixth part of Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, expectations from this film were sky high. Siddharth Anand’s 2019 film ‘War’ had earned Rs 471 crore at the box office, so the audience was expecting a more explosive story and action from its sequel, but unfortunately the sequel of War turned out to be weak.
Story:
The story of the film begins with the return of Major Kabir Dhaliwal who was missing for many years. Hrithik Roshan plays the role of Kabir Dhaliwal. Kabir, who was once considered the best agent of the Indian intelligence agency, is now seen with the enemies of the country. The government gives the responsibility of stopping him to Special Unit Officer Vikram, played by Junior NTR. Vikram is known for his strategic thinking and courage, but his past is also full of mystery. Kavya Thapar i.e. Kiara Advani joins him in this mission.
The twist in the story is that Kabir’s real mission is related to the security of the country but the audience understands this within half an hour, due to which the main surprise of the film is lost. The meaning is clear that the story is predictable or else it can be said that the old formula has been inserted in a new package.
Action and VFX:
The film War is known for its action. The action of the first film won hearts. This time too the action is fine but the VFX has disappointed a bit. Scenes like the fight on a high-speed train, aircraft and bomber jet sequences, and the boat chase in Dubai should have looked spectacular but were weakened by the VFX.
Writing & Direction:
Ayan Mukerji had a big project after ‘Brahmastra’ but I feel the weak script and overdramatic treatment hurt the film. The emotional connection between Hrithik and Jr NTR is also not felt in the film. Ayan Mukherjee’s direction turned out to be ordinary. The story of the film War 2 is by Aditya Chopra which is weak. Sridhar Raghavan has written its screenplay and Abbas Tyrewal has written the dialogues. The story of the film War 2 seems to be unnecessarily long. It seems that the duration of 2 hours 53 minutes is unnecessary. There are many scenes in the film which if cut, the pace of the film would have been better.
Acting:
Hrithik Roshan is one of the best known actors in the country but it seems that despite his brilliant screen presence, he is hampered by weak dialogues and a one-dimensional character. Despite Jr NTR’s debut in Hindi cinema with this film, he did not get a strong elevation. Kiara Advani’s role in the film seemed very limited and unnecessary. And I feel that Anil Kapoor and Ashutosh Rana, despite being talented actors, were completely wasted. That is, it seems that such big stars were not used properly.
Music:
Pritam’s music is average. You may like a song while watching it, but it is worth forgetting as soon as you step out of the theatre. The background score makes an impact in some scenes, especially the action and emotional moments.
Overall:
‘War 2’ is a high-budget, high-profile film that tries to survive on the basis of name and action alone, but a weak story, weak VFX and poor character-writing sink it. If you are a fan of Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, you can watch it once, but you will have to give up the expectation of story and logic.
