Global K-pop icons BTS are officially stepping into a new chapter. Nearly four years after pausing group activities for South Korea’s mandatory military service, the seven-member group is preparing for a massive comeback that includes their fifth studio album and a worldwide tour.
For the March cover story of GQ, journalist Raymond Ang met with RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook in South Korea as they reflected on growth, identity, and the future of the band.
Speaking on accolades, RM acknowledged that while winning a Grammy remains meaningful, it is no longer their primary focus. The group now prioritizes artistic growth over external validation, choosing to submit their work without desperation for awards recognition.
Suga emphasized that the upcoming album reflects emotional depth and maturity. He noted that the music will explore both positive and negative aspects of life, signaling a shift toward introspection. He also hinted that fans should expect a noticeably different sound from their earlier work.
Despite their individual development, unity remains central to BTS. V highlighted that the group’s identity has always been collective, while Jimin reaffirmed their belief that teamwork is the foundation of their success. Their connection with fans, known as ARMY, continues to influence their artistic direction, with Jimin noting the responsibility they feel to share meaningful messages.
Jung Kook described the album’s songwriting camp as liberating, offering creative freedom that made the process enjoyable. Meanwhile, J-Hope reflected on his military experience as personally enriching, allowing him to grow healthier and gain new perspectives.
Looking ahead, Suga even imagined the possibility of BTS performing together well into their later years, suggesting their bond could sustain the group into their 50s or 60s.
Collaborators also praised the group’s chemistry. Chris Martin described BTS as deeply supportive of one another, noting the genuine love and balance within the team. Similarly, Halsey highlighted their respect, shared vision, and collective mindset as key to their success.
As BTS prepares for their return, one message stands clear: their evolution as individuals has only strengthened their unity as a group.
