Actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas has spoken about the challenges of raising her daughter while living under constant public attention. In a recent conversation with People Magazine, the actor discussed why she believes security measures are necessary for her child and how she and her husband are trying to balance privacy with the realities of fame.
Priyanka and her husband, singer and actor Nick Jonas, welcomed their daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas in January 2022 through surrogacy. The couple has previously spoken openly about the difficult period following her birth. Malti Marie was born prematurely and had to spend more than 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a time that the couple has described as emotionally challenging. After bringing their daughter home, they gradually began adjusting to parenthood while navigating their highly visible public lives.
Despite their global popularity, Priyanka and Nick have attempted to maintain a certain level of privacy for their daughter. They have generally avoided sharing clear images of her face in the early stages of her life and have been cautious about how much of her personal life appears on social media. According to Priyanka, this decision stems from a desire to allow their child to grow up with as much normalcy as possible, despite having famous parents.
During the interview, Priyanka explained that while she understands public curiosity surrounding celebrity families, she wants her daughter to experience childhood without constantly feeling watched or judged. She said that growing up in the public eye can create unique pressures, especially for children who did not choose that level of attention themselves.
The actor also highlighted the importance of allowing Malti Marie to make her own choices in the future regarding how visible she wants to be. Priyanka noted that while her daughter’s parents are public figures, she hopes to give the child the freedom to decide how she wants to interact with public life when she is older. According to her, it is important that Malti Marie grows up feeling comfortable around people rather than becoming fearful of strangers because of her parents’ fame.
At the same time, Priyanka acknowledged that public attention can sometimes cross boundaries. She recalled an incident in which a person recorded her young daughter after school and then followed her home. Although the individual was described as an ordinary person rather than someone with malicious intent, the experience reinforced the need for security in their daily lives.
Priyanka explained that the presence of security personnel is primarily intended to prevent situations where her child might be photographed or recorded without consent. She noted that such incidents can occur frequently when celebrities or their families appear in public spaces. For this reason, security is seen as a protective measure rather than an attempt to isolate their daughter from the outside world.
The actor also reflected on how society is still learning about the long-term impact of growing up in the digital age, particularly for children of well-known public figures. She pointed out that the widespread use of smartphones and social media has changed the way privacy works, making it more difficult to control how images and videos of individuals—especially children—are shared online.
Priyanka said that she hopes people will approach celebrity families with empathy and understanding, particularly when children are involved. At the same time, she believes it is important for her daughter to understand the reality of the world she lives in and to develop awareness about personal safety and boundaries.
Ultimately, Priyanka and Nick are trying to strike a balance between public life and private family moments. While they have chosen careers that place them in the spotlight, they hope their daughter will have the opportunity to shape her own relationship with fame in the future. For now, the couple continues to focus on providing a secure and supportive environment in which Malti Marie can grow up and explore the world at her own pace.
