Raja Shivaji trailer feels grand, but where is the story

The trailer looks big and packed with stars, but does it promise a strong story or just spectacle? A grounded take on what works and what feels missing.

The trailer of Raja Shivaji that released today presents the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, one of the most important figures in Indian history. Born as Shivaji Shahaji Bhonsale, he went on to found the Maratha Empire. He was not just a warrior but also a strong administrator and strategist who challenged powerful forces like the Deccan Sultanates and the Mughal Empire.

Many films have already been made on Shivaji Maharaj’s life, and this film adds to that list. From the trailer, it feels like the film is trying to highlight its large star cast as much as the story itself. Riteish Deshmukh is directing, co-writing, and also playing Shivaji Maharaj. The cast includes Sanjay Dutt as Afzal Khan, Abhishek Bachchan as Sambhaji Maharaj, Genelia Deshmukh as Saibai, and Vidya Balan as Badi Begum. There are also several other well-known actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Fardeen Khan, Bhagyashree, Sachin Khedekar, Amole Gupte, and Boman Irani, along with a special appearance by Salman Khan as Jiva Mahala.

Some of the casting feels quite fitting. Sanjay Dutt seems well suited for Afzal Khan, and Vidya Balan brings a strong presence to her role. Genelia Deshmukh looks graceful as Saibai. At the same time, Abhishek Bachchan’s role as Sambhaji Maharaj feels like something that will need to be judged after seeing the full film, since it is an important and complex character.

The trailer mainly focuses on scale. There are large sets, action scenes, and a lot of visual effects. It looks grand, but it does not clearly show how strong the story will be. Today’s audience, especially younger viewers, are used to big visuals and star-studded films. What really makes a difference now is how engaging the story is.

In the end, this is just a trailer. It is meant to create excitement and shape expectations. The actual film could still have much more depth than what is shown here. For now, the film looks big and ambitious, but whether it stands out will depend on how well it tells its story.
