Michelle Obama enjoyed a rare public outing with daughters Malia and Sasha Obama during a family dinner in Beverly Hills this week. The former first lady was spotted arriving at celebrity hotspot Funke Restaurant on Monday night alongside her daughters, with Secret Service agents surrounding the trio as they entered the restaurant. Photos from the outing quickly caught attention online, especially because public appearances featuring all three Obama women together have become increasingly uncommon in recent years.
Michelle, 62, kept things casual and chic for the evening, wearing a fitted Henley top paired with low-rise jeans, a brown belt, and a relaxed jacket draped over her arm.
Meanwhile, Malia Obama, 27, opted for a floral knee-length cami dress styled with black boots and silver jewelry, while Sasha Obama, 24, went for a coordinated denim-on-denim look with pointed navy flats.
The family appeared relaxed and smiling throughout the evening, with reports suggesting the dinner doubled as a belated Mother’s Day celebration.
The outing comes shortly after Michelle opened up about adjusting to life as an empty nester now that both daughters have moved out of the family home.
During a recent episode of her IMO podcast with brother Craig Robinson, Michelle spoke candidly about how different life feels now that Malia and Sasha are fully independent.
“Our kids are grown. They’re out,” she said. “We’re looking at each other like, ‘Hey, I remember you.’”
She also admitted this new chapter has changed the dynamic between her and former President Barack Obama.
“Now I’m not mad about anything. I don’t need you to do anything for me,” Michelle joked during the podcast conversation.
Malia graduated from Harvard University in 2021, while Sasha completed her studies at the University of Southern California in 2023.
Michelle reflected on how parenting became the couple’s “first major joint project” during Barack Obama’s political rise and presidency.
“When those beautiful, lovely kids show up with their own agendas and needs, it changes everything,” she explained.
The Obama daughters spent much of their childhood in the public eye after Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, becoming one of the most recognizable first families in modern American history.
Now adults, both Malia and Sasha have largely stayed away from the political spotlight while slowly building their own careers and personal lives. Still, rare family outings like this continue to draw major attention from fans eager to catch a glimpse of the famously private Obama family together again.
