Grey’s Anatomy is officially expanding once again. ABC has handed a straight-to-series order to a brand-new Texas-set spinoff from franchise creator Shonda Rhimes and current Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis. The untitled medical drama will become the fourth series in the long-running Grey’s Anatomy universe following Private Practice and Station 19. It is also the first franchise entry set outside the West Coast and away from a major metropolitan city.
According to the official description, the new series is an “edgy drama” centered on a team working at a rural West Texas medical center described as “the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”
Unlike previous spinoffs, the upcoming show will not reportedly revolve around an already established Grey’s Anatomy character. Earlier franchise expansions were built around existing fan favorites, including Kate Walsh’s Addison Montgomery in Private Practice and Jason George’s Ben Warren in Station 19.
Still, the new series is expected to maintain connections to the original show. Reports suggest characters from the main Grey’s universe could appear, with Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox being mentioned as a possible crossover figure.
Ellen Pompeo, who stars as Meredith Grey and executive produces the flagship series, will also executive produce the Texas spinoff.
Marinis, who is originally from Houston and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, said she was excited to bring the franchise to her home state.
“This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades,” she said.
The new show is expected to premiere during midseason in 2027.
ABC is reportedly considering a shorter first season, similar to recent network launches that debuted with nine episodes. The scheduling strategy may also align the spinoff closely with Grey’s Anatomy Season 23, potentially allowing both shows to share Thursday night programming blocks.
The expansion comes as ABC continues building franchises around its biggest scripted hits. Over the past year, the network has already expanded both 9-1-1 and The Rookie with additional spinoff projects.
Meanwhile, Grey’s Anatomy remains one of the network’s strongest performers more than two decades after its debut. The Season 22 finale recently delivered its highest audience growth in months, proving the franchise still has a loyal and active fanbase.
The new Texas spinoff will also mark the first time Rhimes has co-written anything within the Grey’s Anatomy universe since the emotional Season 11 episode that killed off Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd.
For longtime fans, the expansion signals that the world of Grey’s Anatomy is far from slowing down.
