Ben Stiller Is Making a New York Knicks Documentary and Fans Are Already Seated

Ben Stiller has officially announced a multi-part HBO documentary about the New York Knicks, made with A24 and full access to the team after their historic championship run.

Ben Stiller wasn’t texting during the NBA Finals. He was working. The longtime New York Knicks superfan has officially announced that he is making a documentary about the newly crowned NBA champions, and suddenly all those clips of him recording courtside make a lot more sense. Appearing on the Roommates Show with Knicks stars Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, Stiller revealed that he is developing a multi-part documentary for HBO in partnership with A24, the NBA, and Madison Square Garden. According to the actor and filmmaker, cameras had already started rolling before the team’s playoff run, and production will continue into next season.

“I’m really excited to announce that we are officially making a documentary about the New York Knicks,” Stiller said, adding that the project will explore multiple eras of the franchise while also capturing the current team’s historic championship journey.

For Knicks fans, the timing could not be better.

The franchise recently ended a championship drought that stretched back to 1973, creating one of the biggest sports stories of the year. Throughout the Finals, celebrities packed Madison Square Garden’s famous Celebrity Row, including Taylor Swift, Timothée Chalamet, Mariska Hargitay, Spike Lee, and Stiller himself.

While some fans joked about how often the Severance director seemed glued to his phone during games, Stiller now says he was gathering footage for the documentary. He was even seen filming celebrations on the court after the Knicks secured their championship victory.

The project also feels like a natural fit for Stiller, who has become almost as famous for his devotion to the Knicks as he is for movies like Zoolander, Night at the Museum, Tropic Thunder, and There’s Something About Mary. For years, his social media accounts have essentially doubled as Knicks fan pages whenever the season is underway.

What makes this documentary particularly exciting is the level of access involved. Stiller confirmed that he plans to interview players, including Brunson and Hart, while documenting the team’s current success and exploring the rich history of one of basketball’s most iconic franchises.

Sports documentaries have become some of the biggest hits in streaming, but this one already has something many others don’t: a fan behind the camera who genuinely cares about the story being told.

And if the passion Stiller showed throughout the Knicks’ championship run is anything to go by, this documentary could end up being every bit as entertaining as the season that inspired it.
