Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan recently paid a heartfelt tribute to his father, the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, popularly known as Tiger Pataudi, during a special ceremony at Winchester College in England. The event marked the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in honour of the legendary cricketer and celebrated his lasting contribution to the sport.
The ceremony took place on June 13 at the college’s historic cricket pavilion, Hunter Tent, as part of Wykeham Day. This annual celebration brings together students, teachers, families and former pupils to celebrate the rich traditions and history of Winchester College, one of the oldest and most respected educational institutions in the United Kingdom.
Saif, who is also a former student of Winchester College, attended the event and spoke warmly about his father’s deep connection with the school. He shared that Winchester was the place where Tiger Pataudi’s cricket journey truly began and remained one of the most cherished chapters of his life. According to Saif, his father often spoke fondly about the friendships, values and experiences he gained during his time at the college.
Expressing his gratitude, Saif said it was a great honour for him to return to the institution and celebrate his father’s legacy. He added that his family was proud and thankful that Winchester College chose to recognise Tiger Pataudi in such a meaningful way. Saif also expressed hope that the plaque would inspire future generations of students, just as the college had inspired his father many years ago.
Sir Richard Stagg, Warden of Winchester College, also praised Tiger Pataudi’s remarkable achievements. He described him as one of the most distinguished figures in cricket history and a source of immense pride for the college. Stagg highlighted that Tiger had broken a long standing school record for the most runs scored in a season, surpassing a record set by Douglas Jardine in 1919. He later went on to become one of India’s greatest cricketers and an influential leader of Indian cricket.
Stagg added that the tribute was also a celebration of the strong and lasting ties between India and the United Kingdom, brought together through their shared passion for cricket.
On the professional front, Saif Ali Khan was recently seen in Kartavya, where his performance received praise from both critics and audiences. He will next appear in Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan and co starring Akshay Kumar. Saif is also set to feature in Netflix’s Hum Hindustani, which is expected to release later this year.
