After Jail and Public Backlash, Rhea Chakraborty Shares Her Emotional Journey

Rhea Chakraborty opens up about the lasting trauma after Sushant Singh Rajput's death, saying therapy helps but healing is still a journey.

The tragic death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020 changed Rhea Chakraborty‘s life forever. Even after several years, the actress says the emotional pain from that difficult period has not completely gone away. Speaking on Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s chat show Double Date, Rhea shared that trauma does not simply disappear. She said it stays with a person, even if they learn how to manage it over time. Rhea appeared on the show with her brother, Shovik Chakraborty, and both spoke honestly about the struggles they continue to face.

Shovik reflected on what he called the first chapter of his life, saying he was once completely focused on his studies and wanted to get into one of India’s top business schools. However, everything changed after Sushant’s death. He said the family spent nearly four to five years trying to recover from the emotional shock of those events. Shovik revealed that he still suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD. When asked if she had fully recovered, Rhea replied that trauma is not something a person can simply forget. She explained that therapy has helped her cope, but healing is a continuous journey and not a final destination.

Rhea also spoke about the extra pressure of dealing with such a painful experience in the public eye. She said that while many people face personal hardships, their situation became a national topic. Constant media attention and public discussions made an already heartbreaking time even more difficult. She added that people still talk about what happened, and she has slowly learned to accept that reality.

Following Sushant Singh Rajput’s death on June 14, 2020, Rhea faced serious allegations from the late actor’s family. She was questioned by several investigating agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate, while the Narcotics Control Bureau arrested both Rhea and her brother in a drug related case. They later received bail, and the Bombay High Court rejected the claim that Rhea had financed Sushant’s alleged drug addiction. In March last year, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a closure report in the case, clearing Rhea of all charges.

Since then, Rhea has slowly rebuilt her life. She has returned to the public spotlight through her podcast and business ventures. While she says the painful memories still remain, she continues to focus on therapy, healing, and moving forward one step at a time.
