Warner Bros has released the first trailer of Digger, the upcoming film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise in the lead role. The teaser introduces Cruise in a completely different look and role, offering audiences a first glimpse of the film’s story, which combines drama, political satire and environmental themes.
In Digger, Tom Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a wealthy Southern oil baron whose actions appear to have triggered a major global environmental crisis. The trailer suggests that melting icebergs and large scale climate related disasters threaten the world, placing Rockwell at the centre of the unfolding events.
As the crisis grows, the President of the United States, played by John Goodman, calls on Rockwell to help resolve the situation. The trailer presents Goodman’s character with elements of political satire, showing a leader who struggles to handle the growing emergency. While the teaser reveals the scale of the disaster, it leaves several questions unanswered about Rockwell’s past actions and whether he can prevent the crisis from becoming even worse.
The film appears to blend suspense with dark humour, using the environmental emergency as the backdrop for a larger story. Rather than revealing major plot details, the trailer focuses on introducing the central conflict and the unusual character played by Cruise.
Ahead of the trailer’s release, Alejandro G. Iñárritu shared a brief message during a Warner Bros presentation. He said, “Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourself, because Mother Nature loves motherf*ckers.”
The film also reunites Iñárritu with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who previously worked with him on the Academy Award winning film The Revenant. According to the makers, Digger was filmed using VistaVision with a specially designed camera based on a 1954 format, aiming to create a distinctive visual style for the film.
The newly released trailer highlights Tom Cruise in one of the most unexpected roles of his career while introducing a story that mixes environmental issues, political commentary and drama. Although many details about the plot remain under wraps, the first look offers a glimpse of the scale and tone of the film, setting the stage for its release.
Digger hits theaters on Oct. 2.
