Tamil film Vishwanath & Sons has recorded a good opening weekend at the Indian box office, collecting Rs. 67.25 crore in its first three days. The film showed a healthy trend through the weekend, with Sunday performing around 30 to 35 per cent better than its opening day, which had benefited from the holiday eve.
The film saw a drop in collections from Saturday to Sunday, but the decline was expected because Saturday was a major Independence Day holiday. Despite the drop, the overall weekend performance remained steady and gave the film a reasonable start at the box office.
Vishwanath & Sons has also performed well in international markets. The film has collected around USD 4 million, which is approximately Rs. 38 crore. This takes its worldwide box office collection to around Rs. 105 crore.
Interestingly, the Telugu states have emerged as the biggest market for the Tamil film. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together contributed around Rs. 27.25 crore during the opening weekend. Tamil Nadu, which is the film’s home market, collected approximately Rs. 26.25 crore.
The performance in the Telugu states can be considered very good, while the Tamil Nadu collection could have been stronger. Suriya had enjoyed a major comeback earlier this year with the blockbuster Karuppu in Tamil Nadu. However, Vishwanath & Sons has performed closer to the level of his earlier films, although its weekend trend is slightly better.
The film has also recorded good numbers in Kerala and Karnataka. Karnataka contributed Rs. 8.00 crore, while Kerala added Rs. 4.75 crore. The Rest of India contributed Rs. 1.00 crore.
The opening weekend is considered good in relation to the film’s reported costs. However, the performance in Tamil Nadu will need to remain steady in the coming days. The distributor in the state could face pressure if the film experiences a sharp fall during the weekdays.
The weekday collections will therefore be important for Vishwanath & Sons. A strong hold from Monday onwards could help the film build on its opening weekend and improve its overall box office prospects.
The day wise India collections are Rs. 17.75 crore on Friday, Rs. 26.00 crore on Saturday and Rs. 23.50 crore on Sunday, taking the total to Rs. 67.25 crore.
The territorial breakdown stands at Rs. 26.25 crore from Tamil Nadu, Rs. 27.25 crore from APTS, Rs. 8.00 crore from Karnataka, Rs. 4.75 crore from Kerala and Rs. 1.00 crore from the Rest of India, taking the India total to Rs. 67.25 crore.
