Alia Bhatt’s Alpha Faces Tough Box Office Reality After 3 Weeks

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's Alpha is nearing the end of its theatrical run with around Rs. 98 crore worldwide, falling short of trade expectations.

Alpha starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, released in theatres with high expectations as the first female led film in the YRF Spy Universe. Directed by Shiv Rawail, the action thriller generated strong interest before its release, especially because it also featured a special appearance by Hrithik Roshan. However, after 19 days in cinemas, the film’s box office performance has remained below expectations.

The film opened with Rs. 9.25 crore on its first day in India. Collections improved over the opening weekend, helping it earn Rs. 34 crore. However, after the first weekend, the film’s earnings started falling steadily. By the end of its first week, Alpha had collected less than Rs. 50 crore. Its second weekend added only Rs. 6 crore, while the third weekend brought in just Rs. 1.30 crore.

The collections continued to decline during the third week. On its third Friday, the film earned around Rs. 25 lakh, and by its third Monday, daily collections had dropped to below Rs. 20 lakh. At that stage, the film had collected around Rs. 58 crore net and Rs. 69 crore gross in India.

The film also earned around $3 million in overseas markets, taking its worldwide gross collection to approximately Rs. 98 crore. Since the daily earnings have slowed significantly, trade analysts believe the film is unlikely to cross the Rs. 100 crore worldwide mark before it completes its theatrical run.

According to trade estimates, Alpha was made on a production budget of around Rs. 100 crore, with additional spending on marketing and promotions. Reports suggest the film needed around Rs. 120 crore to Rs. 125 crore in net collections to recover its total costs. As of July 22, its estimated India net collection stands at around Rs. 75 crore, making it difficult for the film to reach its break even target.

The film’s performance has made it one of the lower earning titles in the YRF Spy Universe, despite the popularity of the franchise. While the film attracted attention before release because of its cast and action packed story, it could not maintain strong collections after the opening weekend.

Alpha stars Alia Bhatt and Sharvari as two assassins and also features Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in important roles. Hrithik Roshan appears in a special cameo, returning as his well known character from the War films.

With its theatrical run now nearing its conclusion, Alpha is expected to finish below early trade expectations, ending its box office journey with a worldwide collection close to Rs. 100 crore.
