Imtiaz Ali’s latest film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, has shown encouraging signs at the box office after completing its first weekend in theatres. Starring veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah in a leading role, the film recorded a rare achievement by earning slightly more on its first Monday than it did on its opening day.
According to box office figures, the film’s gross collection in India has reached Rs 8.10 crore, while its net collection stands at Rs 6.75 crore. On Monday, the movie earned Rs 1.25 crore across 2,139 shows. This was slightly higher than its opening day collection of Rs 1.15 crore on Friday.
The film’s earnings grew steadily over the weekend. It collected Rs 1.85 crore on Saturday and Rs 2.50 crore on Sunday before adding Rs 1.25 crore on Monday. The trend suggests that the film has benefited from positive audience response and continued interest after release.
Main Vaapas Aaunga has also received appreciation from several well known filmmakers. Director Zoya Akhtar praised the project on Instagram Stories, writing, “Congratulations to beautiful people for the beautiful film Main Vaapas Aaunga.”
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap congratulated editor Aarti Bajaj for her work on the film with a brief message that read, “Congratulations champion.”
Director Anubhav Sinha shared a longer note expressing his admiration for the film and Imtiaz Ali’s vision. He wrote, “Imtiaz, my friend, so so so happy to see Main Vaapas Aaunga. In times when film directors, for various reasons, are getting ruthlessly stripped of the most vital virtue of their art form, every frame of your film is soaked in that very virtue. BELIEF!!!”
The film is also notable because it marks the second collaboration between Imtiaz Ali and Diljit Dosanjh after their 2024 Netflix film Amar Singh Chamkila. In addition, the project reunites Ali with composer A. R. Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil. The trio has previously worked together on acclaimed films such as Rockstar, Tamasha, Highway, and Amar Singh Chamkila.
At its core, Main Vaapas Aaunga explores themes linked to Partition, love, identity, and human relationships. Through its emotional storytelling, the film examines the pain, conflict, and lasting impact of historical events that have affected multiple generations.
With stable collections and positive reactions from both audiences and members of the film industry, Main Vaapas Aaunga continues its theatrical run while maintaining attention at the box office.
