Suriya’s Karuppu Nears End Of Historic Box Office Run With Rs. 308 Crore Worldwide

Suriya's Karuppu is nearing the end of its theatrical run with an estimated worldwide gross of Rs. 308 crore and strong collections across markets.

Suriya’s Tamil film Karuppu is nearing the end of its theatrical run after a successful performance at the box office. Although the movie is still playing in some cinemas, its release on digital platforms last week has largely signaled the final stage of its journey in theatres, as is common for many South Indian films.

During the first four days of its fifth week, Karuppu collected approximately Rs. 1.75 crore, taking its total India gross collection to around Rs. 226 crore. Trade estimates suggest the film will finish its run with an India gross of about Rs. 227 crore.

The film has also performed strongly in overseas markets. Internationally, Karuppu has earned close to USD 8.50 million, which translates to around Rs. 81 crore. As a result, its worldwide box office gross currently stands at approximately Rs. 307 crore and is expected to close at around Rs. 308 crore.

These numbers have helped Karuppu secure a place among the biggest films in Tamil cinema history. Based on India collections, the film ranks as the ninth highest grossing Kollywood film of all time. In worldwide earnings, it currently holds the tenth position among Tamil films.

Tamil Nadu remained the film’s strongest market throughout its run. Collections in the state are expected to finish close to Rs. 154 crore, making it the seventh highest grossing film in the state’s box office history. At one stage, industry observers believed the movie could reach Rs. 170 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. However, a noticeable drop in collections during the weekdays of its second week reduced those chances.

Outside Tamil Nadu, the film also delivered strong performances in several regions. The Telugu dubbed version proved especially successful in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, contributing nearly Rs. 35 crore to the overall total. Karnataka added Rs. 22 crore, while Kerala contributed Rs. 14 crore.

The success of Karuppu is particularly important for actor Suriya, as it marks a major commercial hit after a challenging period at the box office. Industry observers have also noted that the film’s success comes at a significant time for Tamil cinema. With changing priorities among some of the industry’s biggest stars, the strong performance of Karuppu has highlighted the continued demand for large scale star driven films.
