Raja Shivaji continued its solid performance at the box office during its second week. The movie collected Rs. 2.50 crore on its second Monday, which was a 43 per cent drop compared to Friday collections. Compared to its first Monday, the drop was around 65 per cent. Even with the decline, the film managed to collect Rs. 21.25 crore in the first four days of its second week.
The movie is expected to finish its second week with collections of around Rs. 28 crore. Its current total stands at Rs. 82.75 crore. By today, the film is likely to cross the Rs. 85 crore mark and is expected to end the week with around Rs. 89 to Rs. 90 crore.
The film is now heading towards a major milestone for Marathi cinema. Raja Shivaji is expected to cross Rs. 100 crore during its third week in theatres. If that happens, it will become the first Marathi film to achieve that number. The earlier record holders were Sairat and Baipan Bhari Deva, both of which earned around Rs. 90 crore.
Unlike those films, Raja Shivaji also has a Hindi dubbed version, which has helped the movie collect a good amount outside Maharashtra. Sairat and Baipan Bhari Deva mainly depended on audiences from Maharashtra and were released only in Marathi.
There was also an expectation that Raja Shivaji could challenge much bigger box office numbers. Comparisons were being made with Tanhaji and Chhaava, both based on figures from the Maratha Empire. Tanhaji had earned around Rs. 175 crore in Maharashtra in 2020, which would be more than Rs. 250 crore after inflation adjustment today. Chhaava later crossed Rs. 300 crore.
Since Raja Shivaji is based on the founder and leader of the Maratha Empire and was made in Marathi, expectations were very high. While the film has performed well and is setting new records for Marathi cinema, it is no longer expected to reach the level achieved by Tanhaji and Chhaava.
