Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has continued its impressive run at the Indian box office as it entered its second week with strong collections. On its second Friday, the film earned approximately Rs. 8.25 crore gross, which is around USD 850K, while the estimated nett collection stood at Rs. 6.75 crore. The latest numbers take the film’s total eight day collection to Rs. 112.75 crore gross, or approximately USD 11.75 million, making it the highest grossing Hollywood film released in India this year.
The film recorded a 58 per cent drop from its opening day collection, which is considered a strong hold for a film that opened at such high levels. In comparison, Oppenheimer, another Christopher Nolan blockbuster, had witnessed a 70 per cent drop over the same period. Interestingly, The Odyssey was collecting only about 10 per cent more than Oppenheimer on its opening day, but it is now earning nearly 50 per cent more in daily collections. This shows that the film has maintained steady audience interest even after its successful opening weekend.
With Rs. 112.75 crore already in the bag, The Odyssey has overtaken Obsession, which remains just below the Rs. 100 crore mark, to become the biggest Hollywood release of the year in India. If the current trend continues, the film is expected to surpass the lifetime collections of Oppenheimer by the end of this week. After that, the next major target will be the Rs. 200 crore milestone, which the film is still on course to achieve.
The biggest test for The Odyssey will come with the release of Spider Man: Brand New Day, which is expected to attract a significant share of moviegoers. However, if the Nolan directorial continues to perform well despite the new competition, it could enjoy a long and successful run in theatres.
A major reason behind the film’s success is Christopher Nolan’s popularity in India. Over the years, he has built a loyal audience, and many movie lovers as well as filmmakers often refer to him as a benchmark for quality filmmaking. His previous releases, including the re release of Interstellar and the global success of Oppenheimer, have further strengthened his position in the Indian market. Although epic historical adventures are not usually among the biggest performing genres in India, The Odyssey has managed to overcome that challenge through strong audience interest and positive word of mouth.
