Tamil film Karuppu continued its strong performance at the worldwide box office during its second weekend. The film collected around USD 1.30 million overseas in its second weekend, although collections dropped nearly 70 per cent compared to its opening weekend. Trade experts say this kind of drop is common for Tamil films because most of the audience watches them during the first few days of release.
The biggest fall came from the Middle East market, where the collections dropped nearly 90 per cent in the second weekend. However, some overseas regions continued to perform steadily. Singapore maintained stable collections, while Malaysia recorded one of the strongest second weekends ever for a Tamil film.
After 10 days in theatres, the overseas collection of Karuppu stands at around USD 7 million, which is approximately Rs. 67 crore. In India, the film has earned Rs. 171.25 crore so far. Combining both domestic and overseas earnings, the worldwide box office gross of the film has now reached approximately Rs. 238 crore.
The film crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark worldwide on Saturday and created an important milestone for Suriya. This is the first film in his career to achieve this figure at the global box office. Trade analysts now expect the movie to comfortably cross Rs. 300 crore before the end of its theatrical run if the current trend continues.
For the past several years, even crossing Rs. 100 crore worldwide had become difficult for Suriya’s films. Karuppu has now changed that situation completely and has become his biggest commercial success till date. Industry experts also believe the success of Karuppu comes at an important time for the Tamil film industry. With Vijay focusing on politics, Rajinikanth slowing down because of age, and Ajith Kumar balancing films with his racing interests, the industry has been looking for stars capable of leading large scale box office successes.
