Karuppu has finally emerged as the big box office success the Tamil film industry had been waiting for in 2026. Starring Suriya in the lead role and directed by RJ Balaji, the fantasy action drama has managed to attract large audiences to theatres after a long dry spell for Tamil cinema.
The film has officially crossed the Rs 100 crore net mark at the Indian box office within just 7 days of release. According to reports, Karuppu has collected around Rs 100.14 crore in India, becoming the first Tamil film in almost nine months to achieve this milestone. The strong performance has brought relief to the Tamil film industry, which had been waiting for a major theatrical blockbuster this year.
Before Karuppu, Coolie starring Rajinikanth was the last Tamil film to dominate the box office during the Independence Day weekend last year. Although films like Good Bad Ugly and Dragon performed well, 2026 had mostly remained slow for Kollywood until Karuppu arrived.
Most of the film’s earnings have come from Tamil Nadu, where it reportedly collected more than Rs 85 crore net. The Telugu dubbed version has also performed well by earning around Rs 15 crore, showing that the film has connected with audiences beyond Tamil speaking regions.
Karuppu has also become a strong overseas success. Reports suggest the movie earned nearly Rs 57 crore overseas during its first week, making it the highest grossing Tamil film overseas in 2026 so far. The worldwide gross collection is now said to be close to Rs 175 crore.
After the film’s successful run, Suriya shared an emotional note thanking audiences and the entire team behind the project. He thanked viewers for supporting the film and appreciated the cast and crew for believing in the story. The actor also praised producers SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu for supporting the film despite delays and production issues.
Suriya also thanked RJ Balaji for confidently promising a blockbuster and eventually delivering a successful film appreciated by audiences. Apart from directing the movie, RJ Balaji also played the main antagonist in the story.
Karuppu combines elements of folk tale, fantasy, and courtroom drama. The story follows Vettai Karuppu, a guardian deity who takes human form as lawyer Saravanan to fight corruption and injustice in a rural legal system controlled by powerful people. As the conflict grows, the deity uses divine powers to protect innocent villagers and restore justice.
The film also marks the reunion of Suriya and Trisha Krishnan after their 2005 film Aaru. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi in important roles.
